At DePauw University George Ferguson of Indiana Zeta helped lead his chapter to raise $10,306 and earn Iron Phi Chapter status for the first time. They also received the Live Like Lou Foundation’s Triple Crown Award.
Serving as Philanthropy Chair, George inspired his brothers to take part in the Iron Phi challenge. His strategy centered on creating personal connections to the mission—inviting guest speakers like Wendy Faust of Live Like Lou and emphasizing the importance of community service, including supporting a local ALS family.
“The most successful Iron Phis consistently reached out to others, often had personal connections to ALS, and shared their athletic goals through social media,” George says.
Iron Phi’s impact didn’t stop at fundraising. The chapter gained greater campus recognition, and several members even won prize hosted through the program. George says one of the biggest surprises was how attainable the goal became once the chapter got moving. “For a chapter that hadn’t consistently achieved this in the past, it was inspiring to see our brothers so engaged all year long.”
His advice to others: “Don’t let the fundraising piece intimidate you. Even a simple event like ‘Pie a Phi’ can make a big difference. The more people who get involved, the easier it becomes.”
One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was serving a local ALS family. “Around 40 brothers helped out last year, and getting to visit Tim and Stephanie’s home in Brownsburg made the impact real. It was an honor.”
From leadership lessons to lifelong values, George’s journey through Iron Phi proved that when service meets brotherhood, great things happen.
