Depauw University Restorative Justice

Depauw University Restorative Justice Restorative Justice at DePauw University

Restorative Justice was founded at DePauw because the current justice system in use, Retributive Justice, which focuses on the punishment for the offender after a conflict occurs, was not sufficient for our small community interactions. Restorative Justice is meant to repair the harm and give closure to the victim in a conflict as well as give the offender a chance to take action and apologize for what they did.

Join us to make talking pieces at our club meeting this Wednesday during the lunch hour in the Darnell Room of Hoover!!

☮️Talking pieces are meaningful objects used in our circle discussions that help us listen and speak with respect. A method inspired by Indigenous traditions, it's an excellent way to build understanding and strengthen our connections.☮️

We hope to see you there!!

Join us on Wednesday, February 19th at 11:30am in the Darnell Room of Hoover!! Feel free to grab lunch, enjoy snacks on us, make your very own talking piece, and learn more about how they work in practice!!

☮️ An important part of restorative justice circles is the talking piece. It is a physical object passed around a circle of people during a restorative justice discussion, signifying that only the person holding the object has the right to speak at that time, ensuring everyone gets a chance to share their thoughts while others actively listen. Acting as a visual cue to indicate who is speaking and who should be listened to, it promotes active listening, equitable participation, and adds significance to the circle process ☮️
