For those who are unable to attend the memorial service for Payton Cook, you can watch it live and on demand afterward. The link is https://www.youtube.com/live/Jbify_8Kwbg?si=044ZB4i5WN1DyTfX. It will go live at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, and the service will begin at 5 p.m.

We also want to share that the other four students who were injured in the car accident – Nate DeSouza, Brandon Newsom, Hagan Windsor and Jordan York – have been released from the hospital. We are extremely grateful for this outcome but know that is not the end of their recovery. We wish them the best as they continue to progress in their healing.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, community members are welcome to visit the Scott M. Niswonger Commons living room on campus and share messages and memories in the books that will be available. At 4 p.m., those books will be moved to the Pioneer Arena lobby for anyone who has not had a chance to write in one. They will also be available in the lobby after the service.

We are extremely grateful for all of the outreach and the supportive messages we have received. We also appreciate the kind words that have been directed toward the Cook family. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Tusculum University has scheduled a memorial service for 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in Pioneer Arena to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of freshman Payton Cook. He passed away Friday, Dec. 5, in a car accident.

The community is invited and encouraged to join us for this service. The Rev. E.J. Swatsell, the university’s director of spiritual life and special projects, will lead it.

Payton, who came to the university from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, was a business administration major and a member of Tusculum’s men’s lacrosse team.

We are extremely grateful for all of the condolences and other supportive comments that have been posted online. This is a painful time for our students, faculty and staff, and we welcome your continuing support as we take steps toward healing. Most importantly, our hearts remain with Payton’s family members, and we pray for them as they respond to this tragedy.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

His unwavering commitment to equality, justice, and service continues to inspire us all. As we reflect on his vision and transformative leadership, we also remember the power of education to drive change and build a more inclusive world.

Tusculum University has been a pioneer in education and inclusivity since its founding in 1794. In 1806, we became the first institution in Tennessee to educate an African-American student. Later, in 1878, we were the first Presbyterian-affiliated institution to admit women. These milestones reflect our longstanding commitment to the values Dr. King championed from the pulpit and beyond.

As we begin a new semester tomorrow, we are reminded that learning is one of the most powerful tools for progress. It is fitting that our students return to class this week, as they carry forward Dr. King's ideals of civic engagement and service into their studies and lives.

Let us all strive to live by the principles Dr. King stood for as we continue to build a community that embraces justice, inclusion, and equality.
