Meet Dawn Gaug ’25 MLIS, the “Library Lady” bringing books and connection throughout Person County.

As an outreach librarian with Person County Public Library, Gaug takes the Book Mobile to preschools, retirement communities, and local events. She is also expanding services for older adults and helping make reading more accessible for patrons who cannot easily get to the library.

Her UNCG MLIS experience helped turn a career pivot into a passion for serving her community.

Earlier this month, New Arrivals Institutes hosted its first ever Refugee Youth Summit, that invited refugee youth ages 16-24 years old from across North Carolina to connect, share experiences, and develop skills for their futures. Carla Vargas, 3rd Year PhD student was a guest speaker and had the opportunity to facilitate a discussion on the mental health aspects of goal achievement, including maintaining motivation, managing the pressures of building a new life in the United States (e.g., navigating various systems), and pursuing personal and professional aspirations in a healthy and sustainable way including tapping into one's own resilience and community.

Meet Syneece Forbes, a future elementary educator whose passion for teaching comes from the power of a teacher who believes in every student.

An Atlanta native and UNCG Elementary Education student, Syneece has found community through her roles as a Resident Advisor, Peer Academic Leader, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Soul City Dance Club. She hopes to one day teach first or second grade and inspire her own students to see their potential.

Youn Jung Ho, a 3rd year doctoral student in CED, received a student research grant from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. They will be exploring critical reflexivity in counselors' development that could support the application of culturally sensitive and just clinical practices. Congratulations, Youn Jung!
