Center for Principled Problem Solving and Excellence in Teaching

Center for Principled Problem Solving and Excellence in Teaching Engage. Inspire. Learn. WHAT WE DO. HOW WE DO IT. OUR CURRICULUM
Principled Problem Solving (PPS) is a central theme of the Guilford College academic curriculum.

Through our experiential programs, classes/seminars, and support services, Guilford College students, staff, and faculty are equipped with innovative and transformative knowledge and skills. These opportunities empower participants to use their life experience, knowledge, creativity, critical thinking, and research skills to address complex social issues at the campus, local, national and global l

evels. Our curriculum offers a three-tiered educational strategy for engaging complex social issues:

Foundations: Provides participants with essential knowledge and skills in reading, writing, quantitative reasoning, creative and critical thinking, and discerning values. Narratives and Practice: From foundations, the curriculum shifts to narratives and practice. This tier challenges participants to understand and analyze systems and structures where complex social issues tend to exist. Application: Bridging foundations and practice is application. Application, simply put, is real human beings, addressing real social issues in innovative and transformative ways. OUR APPROACH
Our approach to engaging complex social issues is “Values Driven”. The Guilford College 7 Core Values guides our cultivation practices:
COMMUNITY
DIVERSITY
EQUALITY
EXCELLENCE
INTEGRITY
JUSTICE
STEWARDSHIP

OUR MODEL
The Principled Problem Solving (PPS) Model is unique among theories of leadership and change. The PPS Model identifies and engages complex issues in a manner that is guided by core values and characterized by integrity. It provides a flexible process of navigating social change and innovation.
