We are hiring an Assistant Professor in Urban Sustainability

The Department of Geography, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of Urban Sustainability to begin August 1, 2025. We seek a dynamic scholar-teacher to help us build on existing departmental strengths, especially in sustainability, urban planning, and GIScience. We are particularly interested in candidates with high potential to develop an externally funded research program and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at the intersection of the following areas: sustainable urban planning, sustainability, environmental geography, and environmental studies. Examples of potential topical expertise include environmental and climate justice, sustainable/low-carbon urban development, housing and community development, inequality and planning, and sustainability science. It is expected that the candidate will teach courses in these areas as well as general education courses in one or more of environment and sustainability, human geography, resource geography, or physical geography. Strong skills and experience using geographic information systems (GIS) in research is highly desirable, but not mandatory.

The Department of Geography, Environment, and Sustainability currently offers the following degrees: B.A., B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. The Department houses the Environment & Sustainability Program. Information on the Department’s faculty, initiatives, degree programs, and concentrations can be found at our website (https://ges.uncg.edu). The Department also has a multi-disciplinary slate of affiliated faculty from across campus together with strong associations with several interdisciplinary programs on campus; ability to work interdisciplinarily with other departments and programs will be viewed favorably and should be spelled out in the application letter. UNCG is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral Research University with Higher Research Activity.

Candidates must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in Geography, Sustainability, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies or an allied field by August 1, 2025.

UNCG is a Minority Serving Institution. 54% of students are people of color. 51% of all undergraduates self-identify as first-generation students, and 57% of undergraduates receive Pell grants. UNCG and the GES Department foster an environment of collaboration across departments and schools and support community-engaged research. UNCG is located in a metropolitan area of more than 1.7 million in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. UNCG is an EOE/AA/M/F/D/V employer and is strongly committed to increasing faculty diversity.
