Quest for excellence -The quest for leadership excellence must be a never-ending one. It must be Churchillian in its posture, Kingsonian in its vision and Mandela like in its perseverance. It must stay on task, capture the moral high ground, be risk oriented while avoiding recklessness, exhibit courage under fire, give no quarter to the ne’er do well’s, seek to advance the institution on multiple fronts, push core values, promote service before self, exude a no nonsense push for accountability and possess a knowledge base which inculcates fiscal finesse and technology know how. This type of leader, whether it be in higher education, or the corporate sector, will surely demonstrate the ability to move the constituency forward, to be a lion, to stand tall on life’s yellow brick road and demonstrate the ability to take decisive action in the face of uncertainty, notwithstanding the challenges of change, complexity, diversity, and dwindling resources. Ultimately, this type of leadership avoids the mediocre, side steps laissez faire and champion mission accommodation. It’s not leadership 101. It’s leadership period! - -
