As a major university with more than 2,000 students and another 5,000 faculty and staff, East Carolina requires considerable resources just to keep the doors open. That is why it is so important that the we are actively working to eliminate wasteful practices and improve efficiency wherever possible. In an age when environmental concerns are gaining more public support and pennies are counted like

never before, it makes sense forus to conserve wherever it can. But accepting the challenge of creating a more sustainable campus goes beyond mere budgetary concerns or public relations. The United Nations defines sustainability as “the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” As an institution that prides itself on preparing leaders, it is imperative that ECU takes the initiative to ensure that this university is able to prepare the next generation. to our America Recycles Day events!

First, we had the opportunity to table at Wright Plaza with .ecu and .eco.pirates throughout the day to meet students, faculty, and staff, and educate them on recycling!

Then we had a fun craft while ECU's Recycling and Waste Reduction Coordinator, our Waste Reduction Intern, and the president of Eco-Pirates presented on recycling and other methods of waste reduction in the evening.

What do you think we should do for this November?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which means its the perfect time to talk about eco-anxiety. Worrying about the future is perfectly valid, but its important that we manage and channel those anxieties into something useful 🌱.

Dr. Alex Hodges is officially Sprout Certified in our Green Office Program 🌱 !

Sustainability means making decisions today that protect the health and well-being of people, communities, and the environment for the long term. In healthcare, it also means recognizing that environmental conditions, such as heat, air quality, water safety, and disaster risk, directly impact health outcomes. To me, sustainability is about stewardship, prevention, and creating systems that support both human and planetary health.
