To celebrate Furman University’s Bicentennial, the Departments of Asian Studies, Theatre Arts, and Anthropology present Kinosh*ta Kabuki’s “Kanjincho” Friday, Jan. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium at Furman University. Limited general admission tickets are available for $50 per person.
The U.S. tour of Kinosh*ta Kabuki’s “Kanjincho” is produced by the Japan Society. The program is supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, Japan Arts Council and subsidized by JLOX+, with funding from The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.
The drama follows a group of refugees fleeing to safety. An uncompromising inspector whose life depends on apprehending the fugitive is among the group. Can they cross the border?
Recognized as a masterpiece of kabuki theater, “Kanjincho” draws its tale from the 12th century, featuring deception, quick wit and a riotous and nail-biting tit-for-tat with impossibly high stakes as its centerpiece.
Shusuke Yagi, Furman professor of Asian studies, says, “We are honored to host an internationally renowned theatre troupe, supported by the Japanese government, as their sole stop in the Southeast during their inaugural North American tour. Furman has a long tradition of engaging with the wider world and sharing those experiences with our community, and we remain committed to that mission. We believe this event offers a meaningful opportunity to ‘together, reflect and aspire.’”
Kinosh*ta Kabuki gleefully charges across the boundary between bombastic traditional kabuki drama and contemporary theater in a hip and pop culture-drenched take on this surprisingly evergreen tale about transcending borders.
Created by brilliant young dramaturg Yuichi Kinosh*ta with in-demand guest director Kunio Sugihara, experience the international sensation that has cemented Kinosh*ta Kabuki’s place in the current pantheon of sterling modern theater companies.

Celebrating Furman University’s Bicentennial, the Asian Studies, Theatre Arts, and Anthropology Departments present 木ノ下歌舞伎の勧進帳 (Kinosh*ta Kabuki's ‘Kanjincho’), a modern take on the classic Kabuki performance, on January 16 (Friday) from 7:30 to 9:00 pm at McAlister Auditorium. Furman University will be the only Southeast stop on their first North American tour. Asian Studies Student Oscar Guillen '22 is an Inaugural Furman Angel Investor and Plans to Expand His Growing Expertise

When he was a young boy, Oscar Guillen ’22 and his mother emigrated to the United States from Honduras in search of economic opportunities. Now, the Furman University Asian studies major wants to help young people in Honduras start businesses and spur the economy there.

A new program for Furman students, developed by The Robert and Margaret Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and in collaboration with VentureSouth, could help him do that.

Guillen is in the inaugural cohort of the Furman Angel Analyst Fellows, learning what it takes to be angel investors........

Guillen said he aspires to start an angel investing group in Honduras, and possibly in Mexico, where his stepfather is from. The countries, he said, “need investment into entrepreneurs to create new business and economic opportunities.”

He appreciates that the program was open to non-business majors, and says his background in humanities gives him a more global perspective on things.

“I had the opportunity to learn about the cultures, customs, traditions and languages of countries around the world, which is important for the next generation of leaders,” Guillen said.
