As Furman moves through one of the busiest times of the semester, leading up to LDOC, final projects, and long days in the library, there’s a certain energy on campus right now.
The Duke Library is full. Students are studying, meeting, laughing, and pushing through the final stretch. There are even moments of lightness woven in, like a petting zoo on the Joseph Vaughn Plaza that brings students together for a quick break and a lot of smiles. It’s lively. It’s full. It’s exactly what this time of year should be.
It’s also why we’re thinking about something quieter.
This Dins Day, the Furman Libraries are raising funds to create the Jenny Colvin Mindfulness Center, a space designed not for productivity, but for contemplation.
Jenny Colvin served Furman as Music Librarian and Associate Director of Outreach for more than 15 years. She was a colleague, a collaborator, and for many, a steady and thoughtful presence in the life of the library. Jenny believed deeply in the importance of mindfulness, the simple but powerful act of slowing down and taking care of yourself. She often spoke about her vision for a dedicated space in the library where students could do just that.
Not just a study room or another campus resource. An oasis. A place where a student overwhelmed during midterms could step away and reset, find a moment of quiet between classes, or simply sit for a few minutes. That vision is now within reach.
The Jenny Colvin Mindfulness Center will be intentionally designed, with soft seating, a calming aesthetic, and a sense of separation from the usual rush of campus life. It will invite reflection without asking anything in return. If the library is already where students come to think, this will be where they come to pause.
The library has always been more than a place for coursework. It’s where students find their rhythm, whether that’s focus, connection, or a quiet corner to land.
The Jenny Colvin Mindfulness Center builds on what already makes the library special by creating a space intentionally designed for rest, reflection, and mental reset.
💜How You Can Make an Impact💜
Thanks to generous donors, every gift is matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact.
That means participation matters just as much as size. A gift of $5 makes a real difference, and every donor helps move us closer, not just to our goal, but to creating something lasting for Furman students.
The Jenny Colvin Mindfulness Center is not just about honoring the past. It’s about shaping the everyday experience of Furman students for years to come. In the middle of a busy campus, it will stand as a quiet reminder to pause, to reflect, and to begin again.
