Joyner Library’s conservator, Larry Houston, and the head of the North Carolina Collection, Jennifer Daugherty, worked with Dr. Helen Dixon’s Ancient Near Eastern History class to provide students an opportunity to see some of our collections of early Arabic, Hebrew, Latin and Greek works. After learning about early texts on papyrus, students were given the opportunity to make some historic ink and try out brushes and reed pens for writing on real papyrus. Students wrote poetry, copied magic healing charms from early medical texts, or created images based on works from our Special and Circulating Collections.
This was a fantastic collaboration and a great experiential learning opportunity for the participants!

On March 28, Public History and Library Science students teamed up for the 2026 Digital Archiving Symposium, held at Joyner Library. We learned about web crawling, email archiving, and other digital archiving topics with the help of Kristen Daniel (Outreach Librarian), Alston Cobourn (University Archivist), Vanessa Reyes (Library Sciences Faculty), and Helen Dixon (History faculty)!
