Job opportunity for very recent/soon-to-be grads or those slightly more experienced in the Redish Lab at the University of Minnesota:

One of my long-time techs is leaving for greener pastures and I'm looking to hire a new technician to help us with lab procedures (probe building, drive development, surgery, histology, etc.). There would be a lot of opportunities to interact with lots of great science and to develop their own skill sets. (I'm happy to train people.)

Here's the basic description:
70% - Research: Support for our behavioral neurophysiology work, including histology, surgery, construction of microdrives for tetrodes and silicon probes, mazes for behavior, optical probes for optogenetics.
20% - Research Design: There will also be opportunities for creative insight in the improvement of these methods and technologies. A key goal will be participation in discussions relating to research, assistance with experimental design and construction. Consult academic literature or experiment to incorporate new procedures, technologies, or projects. Streamline and improve current protocols where possible.
10% - Lab Maintenance: Coordinate with the other technicians to ensure lab compliance with regulatory protocols (animal care, biosafety, etc). Be available to solve time-sensitive, unexpected problems. Train students and volunteers in laboratory procedures. Maintain lab organization, supply inventories, intra-lab scheduling, and ensure that standard-operating-procedures are updated. Update training as necessary and maintain records (surgery, controlled substance, purchasing) to comply with regulations.

The lab (and the University of Minnesota) recognizes and values the importance of diversity and inclusion in enriching the employment experience of its employees and in supporting the academic mission. We are committed to attracting and retaining employees with varying identities and backgrounds. We provide equal access to and opportunity in its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

🎶 You're hot, then you're cold...

The Nobel Committee recognized key discoveries in sensory neuroscience, awarding the prize in Physiology/Medicine to Ardem Patapounian and David Julies for identification of receptors that allow us to feel heat (TRPV1, which detects both the temperature and the spicy kind 🔥), cold (TRPM1, which also responds to menthol), and pressure on your skin (Piezo). So cool! ❄️ 🤓

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2021 was awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian "for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch".

Science training is about more than science! Don't underestimate all the amazing skills you bring to the table.

Since I was a child, I’ve had two passions: science and storytelling. For the vast majority of my career, I’ve pursued the former. I majored in neuroscience at Smith College and went on to earn my doctorate at Northwestern University. I recently completed my postdoctoral training at C...
