Hi everyone!! Hope the first full week of school is treating everyone well. This Thursday (9/9) the Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Studies Department is hosting an SEPC meet-and-greet.

Feel free to come and meet us, discuss the department, study abroad, and learn more about what is offered here at Grinnell. This is open to everyone, so 1st or 2nd years looking into majors, or 3rd or 4th years who want to change an add a major/concentration come on out!

We will be in Kingston Plaza (the outdoor area between HSSC and Noyce) from 4-5pm on Thursday Sept. 9th. For more information please email [burchmak].

Please join us as Carlos Rojas, professor of Chinese Cultural Studies, Gender, Sexuality, & Feminist Studies, and Cinematic Arts at Duke University discusses the works of artist Song D**g. In Beijing-based performance artist Song D**g's "Touching Father" series (1997-2002), he uses technologically-mediated means of "touching" his father (for instance, projecting an image of his hand onto his father's face and body) in order to get closer to his father, from whom he had been physically distant while growing up.

Taking inspiration from Song D**g's work, this talk considers three films from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, each of which can be dated almost precisely to the same historical moment that Song D**g completed the first iteration of "Touching my Father." Like Song D**g, moreover, each of these works uses a focus on mediated physical contact to examine a set of conflicted relationships between different pairs of male protagonists.
