Student Leadership Development Committee at SUCOL

Is a group of student leaders who plan and implement monthly leadership luncheons and an annual leadership retreat for student.

The Leadership Development Committee aspires to instill a variety of effective leadership techniques in their colleagues through the presentation of speakers whom are actively promoting leadership in their own communities, and through hands-on workshops where students will learn leadership techniques that they can take and apply to situations that may arise in both their lives and careers. By enco

uraging effective leadership during law school and equipping students with the necessary tools for such, the Leadership Development Committee is better preparing potential attorneys for challenges they may face in practice. By providing valuable leadership guidance at this stage of the educational process, the Leadership Development Committee aims to have a positive effect on the caliber of new attorneys, ultimately benefitting the legal profession as a whole.

The Student Leadership Development Committee’s final luncheon for the semester is happening this Wednesday in the Great Hall! You get one leadership credit for attending. After getting 15 leadership credits and writing a Capstone Essay by the time you graduate, you can receive a certificate of recognition at graduation. RSVP on Engage! We will have Fresh Kitchen!

Join SLDC, HBA, ILSA, and FAWL for International Women’s week. This event is SLDC’s Spring Workshop and will count as TWO leadership credits! This event will feature a panel of female judges and lawyers who will discuss their various backgrounds, legal experiences, success, and work-life balance. There will also be the opportunity for a Q&A and networking after the panel finishes speaking. This event will either be in the Great Hall or Mann Lounge and catered by Chicken Salad Chick! 🚨🚨anyone looking for more leadership credits!? Look no further as SLDC is offering a BONUS luncheon. SLDC has partnered with the Student Veterans Organization and Veterans Law Institute in welcoming Brigadier General, Robert Sullivan, for a discussion on leadership and service (hey, that’s one of SLDC’s Pillars!!) This event will take place on Tuesday, February 28th from 12:00-1:00PM in classroom F where lunch will be served! - and don’t forget to sign in so that you can earn your 1 leadership credit for attending! SLDC hopes to see everyone there!

✨SLDC will be hosting its 2023 Spring Retreat on Saturday, February 25th from 9:30am - 2:30pm. RSVP on Engage is Required. Attending this event will earn you FIVE credits toward your leadership certificate! SLDC will be exploring the various skills that law students need in order to survive law school and the practice of law. Joining us will be our keynote speaker, David Herrera, who will discuss his personal journey in law school and how the skills and experiences he had during law school prepared him for the practice of law today. Breakfast and lunch will be provided! We hope to see everyone there!!✨

Looking for another way to earn a leadership credit? Submit an essay for SLDC’s essay contest! Submitting an essay will earn you 1 leadership credit! Additionally, the one person selected as the winner will earn 2 leadership credits! The winner will be selected based on adherence to the prompt, creativity, and understanding of SLDC’s pillars.

The essay is due by 12pm on November 17th and should be 1-2 pages. Please email all submissions to [email protected]

The prompt is found below and also on SLDC’s Engage page:

“Pick a person you know (or a luncheon speaker from this semester) who you think exemplifies one of SLDC’s 6 leadership pillars. Our leadership pillars are: problem solving, management, service, team building, communication, and community. Explain how the attributes and actions of the person you choose embody that pillar.”
