So it wasn’t just a fever dream, right? 🌅On Thursday, March 12th, 2026, the SLU Contemporary Gallery hosted the opening reception of the Spring 2026 Juried Exhibition. It was an energetic turnout! We love hosting families and friends of the Southeastern Louisiana University’s Visual Art + Design Department.

We want to give much love, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who attended, and supported students featured in the showcase.

We also give thanks to the students who participated in the courageous act of submitting work. Without you, our gallery walls could never be filled more with such creativity and talent. Let’s also give a shoutout to the Visual Art+Design Department’s faculty for directing students into the creative stars that they are. Lastly, the gallery would like to give such gratitude to our jurors, Kay Curley and Orlando Hernandez Ying for selecting a beautiful array of works.

While the Alumni Exhibition is over, we’re certainly not over Katie Singleton’s “To Handcrafted Birds and All Things Made up.” From the class of 2023, Singleton’s soft sculpture offers a reminder of how life is carried through storytelling and memory. Thematically, she connects fabric, imagery, and domestic furniture to symbolize notions of home. Singleton writes,

“A memory of my brother’s dirt bike leaning against the side of our house. A striped white bedsheet holds some of the image of that bike, but mostly the feeling. What is more real than the space that exists between what we remember and what we can say?”

The composition in the round adds depth to the work– the audience had the ability to walk around this piece and experience a narrative, bridging the connection between her personal story and the audience’s.

Excited to see the next story we’re telling? Then be on the lookout for our next exhibition, the Spring 2026 Juried Exhibition! With submissions ending this 📍Thursday, March 5th at 5:00pm📍, come out and shout our creative students here at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Even though the Alumni exhibition is officially over, we will continue to highlight some of the artworks in the show. It was a honor to host the ceramic artist, Ashlynn Zimmerman ℅ 2024.

Zimmerman presented her expanded circular series where she explored glazes within the medium of ceramics. Glazing is an essential part of the ceramic medium, full of surprise and surrender to the process. Zimmerman demonstrated the power of the multiple with this body of work. She wrote about “ the opportunity to bring out new and unusual colors when applied together. Glaze combined with flux offers the opportunity to see the ways these colors move and shift.”

Five ceramic works “Marigold,” “Tangelo,” “Obsidian,” “Mulberry,”and “Jade.” although small in scale, demanded the audience’s attention with the even layers of application, color composition, and overall ceramic techniques used for each plate.

As we continue to prepare for our next show, stay tuned and feel free to visit our transitional process as we organize for the Spring 2026 Juried Exhibition!📌🖼️

We are open Monday - Thursday, from 8am to 5pm, Fridays, 8am - 12pm. Can’t wait to see you here!

Oyster you glad Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition is still going?🦪

With today being the last day of the Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition, the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery would like to introduce our next featured artist, Aubree Carrier. Carrier’s poster “Oyster Festival.” Draws the eye via choice of color palette. Here Carrier keeps her colors muted and follows a more warm color scheme. Explained in her statement, Carrier makes the claim that this was a purposeful design choice. A choice made well because it adds to the goal of Carrier’s concept. She writes:

“This poster is a nod to Oyster Festival posters of the past. Combining classic styles with more modern subjects shows the timelessness of the festival”

Carrier’s poster is a reflection of the legacy of the Visual Art + Design Department here as Southeastern. Her graphic design displays the teachings of visually communicating concepts or ideas through the use of illustration and digital composition. Here, she uses colors and subject matter to intertwine the present and past.

Oyster looking for a place to explore?🦪While offering puns, the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery also offers only a couple more days left to come visit the Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition, with its close being TODAY on Wednesday, February 25th, 2026!

Freshly out and rolling from the class of 2025, the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is happy to be featuring design work by alumna Ashton Persick, in our Spring 2026 Alumni exhibition!

In “Personalized Cast Cards,” Persick’s love of theatre and her passion for graphic design coalesce. Persick’s cards each show quite a skill of hierarchy and composition. From the precise color palette emphasized on each card which only adds more focus to the actor, to use of playful illustrations, Persick represents the design area’s well rounded tradition. Persick credits this project to:

The legacy of Southeastern’s Visual Art + Design Department spans 60 years in our current exhibition! Artist, Andree Maduell, who is currently featured in the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery’s Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition, exhibits her work “Still Life of Silence.” Maduell shares that this piece was produced based on past professors’ teachings in 1963!

From the graduating class of 1965, Maudell’s piece shows just how much talent comes through the Southeastern’s Visual Art+ Design Department.

While the values range in this work, the colors remain warm in tone. This creates unity in the overall work and allows us to be absorbed in the individual objects depicted.

Want to relax and be amazed? Well then, the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is the right place for you to visit. Witness the multitude of visionaries featured in the Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition.

From the class of 1992, Jacqueline Ehle Inglefield’s artwork brings the party to the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery’s Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition! This sculptor knows how to brighten the room with her intricate displays.

Inglefield features two pieces “Painted Pony” and “Lion.” Both are compositions that tie visually together despite using found objects and detritus from Carnival culture. When the audience rests their eyes on “Painted Pony,” they are witnessing the moments Inglefield shared during her time at Southeastern Louisiana University. The work exists as a mixed media and time capsule, Inglefield writes:

“::This work:: is composed of dry cleaning coat hangers and memorabilia of my life in Southeastern Louisiana.”

To keep up the festive energy,, the audience can also focus their eyes on Inglefield’s “Lion.” She reflects on this piece, calling it “the most important piece” of her career. Structured on a vintage wagon, the playful nature of composition can really be seen. However the thematic meaning is something that drives viewers closer. Inglefield writes:

“ Lion mixes my bricolage with plastic and was one of the first pieces I did for my series pLASTic HABITat. pLASTic HABITat gives my practice a dip into the vast sea of ecological consciousness.”

Need a place to hangout with friends, and learn? Then the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is the right place for you! Be entertained by such talents from past Lions featured in the Spring 2026 Alumni Exhibition.

We are open Monday - Thursday, from 8am to 5pm, Fridays, 8am - 12pm. Can’t wait to see you here🎉!
