The Southeastern Louisiana University Contemporary Art Gallery is devoted to the presentation of national and regional exhibitions of contemporary art, lectures and workshops. The gallery is part of the Fine and Performing Arts Department and as such provides a forum for contemporary art for students, the city of Hammond and residents of the North Shore. Exhibitions and educational programs at SLU

CAG connect students with opportunities to engage with artworks and artists while giving them insight into current directions in contemporary art. The gallery located at 100 East Stadium, next to Clark Hall at the end of Spruce Street.

TOMORROW at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery, Assistant Professor of Ceramics, Katie Baczeski will be delivering an artist talk at 2PM in the East Stadium Gallery Lecture Area (Wednesday September 9th, 2026).

Following an artist-in-residence at Taoyang Alley in Jingdezhen, China, the world-renowned home of porcelain, Baczeski comes back with new knowledge and teachings that she learned from her time spent over the summer. Join us at 2PM to gain some insight into her process and how it relates to her artistic relationship between her body and clay.

Kathryn Agnes Baczeski is a clay-based artist and Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. Her teaching and creative practices encompass clay, ceramics, sculpture, installation, performance art, and experiential immersive experiences.

Kick off the opening reception of the 2026 Art + Design Faculty Exhibition by joining us for a performance by our very own Assistant Professor of Digital Media, Alexis Gideon!

Thursday September 3rd at 5pm!

Alexis Gideon is a visual artist, composer, performer, and educator best known for his innovative animated live video operas and interdisciplinary techniques.

Gideon has performed and exhibited throughout the world, including at Moderna Museet Stockholm, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and Time Zones Festival Italia.

His work is in the collection of the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, the Debra & Dennis Scholl Collection in Miami, FL, The Benter Foundation in Pittsburgh, PA as well as a number of private collections.

TONIGHT! Come visit SLU Contemporary Art Gallery for the closing reception of our 2026 Art + the Environment Exhibition from 5PM-7PM. Showcasing artwork from students, faculty, and alumni with work inspired by the Art + the Environment course offered at Southeastern, uniting the process of creation through our environment.

“In Spirits”, 2026 by Bret Harmeyer, a collection of sculptural pieces exploring the concept of preservation.

“Memory”, 2025 by Autumn Smedley, a collection of polaroids from their time at Turtle Cove.

“Wish You Were Here”, 2026 by Brandon Pursifull, a sculptural and visual recreation of a small environment he wishes to share to the viewer.

Only TWO days until the 2026 Art + the Environment Exhibition closes at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery! Visit from 9AM-5PM and have a chance to view work from students, faculty, and alumni.

If you don’t have a chance to see while we’re open, be sure to visit our closing reception on AUGUST 27TH from 5PM-7PM.

Selected artwork includes pieces based off the Art + the Environment Course offered at Southeastern taught by esteemed professors, Lily Brooks (Lily Brooks) and Ernie Milsted (E. Milsted). Curated by Autumn Smedley (Autumn “Artie” Smedley) and Izzy Bradley (Izzy jack bradley).

Spanning across a wide array of mediums such as sculpture, photography, printmaking, painting, and mixed media installation, every piece is united through the exploration of our environment.

“Metamorphosis”, 2026 by Libby S. Martin. Video Installation of a collection of videos of the environment at Joyce Wildlife Management Area. Originally to immerse viewers into the environment of Louisiana swamp and wetlands becomes a meaningful tribute to her late sister.

“Nothing Gold Can Stay”, 2024 by Ashton Howard. Series of paintings that incorporates gold accents on top of blue cyanotype portraits. Howard unites the processes of painting with nature through collaging portraits and cyanotype impressions silhouetted flora.

“Seeking Smallness”, 2025 by Karen Hoffpauir. Series of pencil and charcoal drawings of swamp landscapes emphasizing the beauty of solitude and reconnecting with the environment.

“Sailboats”, 2026 by Chloe Vogt. A mixed media video projection of personal recordings at Turtle Cove onto found objects. Vogt comments on the act of connection through the solidarity of women by passing down rituals and advice.

“J’ai am une solitair”, 2026 by Izzy Bradley. A collection of photographs surrounding her feelings of isolation and peace within the environment. She captures the still moments that surround the environment.

Less than a week until the Art + the Environment Exhibition closes, Lions! Take a look at three artists currently on view at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery.

“Growing Up Southern”, 2026 by Trinitee Wilson uses photography, cyanotype, painting, and sewing to document her own experiences of growing up in southern Louisiana in a unified collage. Her use of mixed media materials becomes a method of expressing all the influences in her life that make up her memories and what she intends to preserve through creating.

Jamison Colors Futrell’s “My Mother’s Nature”, 2023, a meaningful tribute to their mother, is a quilt with embroidered nature motifs throughout eight of the sixteen squares. He memorializes memories and trips taken with his mother and how it has shaped him into the person he is today.

“BURROW: A Fine Line”, 2026 by Savannah Rae Phillips is taken from a larger collection of work that follows the relationships between life and death represented through the systems of human consumption. Using ceramic sculptures of rabbits, Phillips intentionally “captures the moment of dispatch of a farm-raised rabbit [transforming] a moment in time into something between the beautiful and macabre.” She focuses on the cost in order for humans to eat and what it means for the animals on the other end of the transaction.

One week left of the Art + the Environment Show at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery and we are proud to showcase student Xzavier Reed’s (Flora_flor 🍎) sculptures “Ancient Debris”, 2026 and “States of Decay”, 2025.

“Ancient Debris” uses found objects to build a world of flora and foliage reminiscent of a time long before construction. He repurposes man-made objects and waste through assembling them in new ways to give meaning and life again. With a central copper figure, the objects become members of their own world inside of the environment it has been built.

“States of decay” follows personified apples traveling through a linear state of deterioration and how giving a face to these inanimate objects to focus on the states of life and decay. How do each of the emotions feel to you?

Less than a week until classes begin, Lions!

SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to showcase Southeastern alums, Maxon Elliot’s “Existence,” 2025, and their collaborative project with Adrien Doucet in “, a q***r ...,” 2026.

“Existence,” a collection of photographs by Elliot that focuses on the choices and intentions when living in areas that feel removed from the greater part of conventional society. They photograph man-made objects within spaces where nature would have been in control in the past if not for human intervention. Elliot questions the choices of living in spaces that may have been destroyed or altered and how it relates to their own lived experience.

“, a q***r …,” is a collaborative project between Maxon Elliot and Adrien Doucet centering on the non-conforming gender identity experience and the parallels of physical gender presentation between humans and animals such as deer. Elliot and Doucet focus on the ways masculinity is performed within the q***r identity and the interconnected, vulnerable aspects of the body. The pieces that Doucet wears are ceramic buck antlers compressing around the chest to communicate a juxtaposition in gender expression.

Less than ten days until Fall Semester, Lions! On view until August 27, “Permanence”, 2026 by student Lahna Rose here at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery.

Video documentation from her father after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina to Plaquemines Parish with an audio interviews with her Great Aunt and Great Grandmother.

Rose combines the two worlds to make amends to her family history between New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish that she continues to explore and understand. She uses the footage and interviews to think about the memories of her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. As well as analyzing how traumatic events influence what stories get passed down as memories or stay forgotten.
