During 2021-2022, Gavit and Morton High School’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW)programs merged to form a full PLTW Engineering and Computer Science program. The PLTW program at Morton High School has expanded the course offerings through this merger. The program will be able to sustain a Technical Honors Program, Dual Credits, Technical Honors Society, and the program’s strong capacity for running a long-standing Pre- Engineering and Computer Science Program. In partnership with Ardagh Group, the $15,000 grant will support the forward movement of the PLTW programs, help shape and give guidance for the future of the program, replace broken and old required equipment, and increase the awareness, demand, and job placement for STEM skills in the Hammond Community. Additionally, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Education, Morton has recently received another grant totaling $3,900 for Computer Science. Under the leadership of Ms. Katherine Broadnax for 17 years, the PLTW Engineering Teacher, the PLTW Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, and Computer Science programs have been maintained and run by being awarded over $100,000 of grant funding from Carl Perkins Grants, Best Buy Grants, and Hammond Community Corporations Grants, and in partnership with: Ardagh Group and IDOE awarded grants through PLTW. Congratulations Morton High School for the on-going success and maintaining of the PLTW program and supporting students with STEM, PBL, nurturing students for a bright future after high school, and obtaining dual credits for students!!

I do it for my students!! I have been teaching Dual Credit Engineering courses for about 14 of the 16 years of that I have been teaching. This year I have been awarded the Inaugural President's Award of Excellence in Dual Credit Instruction, in June 2022. I love what I do, I love what I teach!! I have recruited and mentored teachers with Dual Credit, registered students, check assessment scores, given dual credit assessments, and taught students to transfer their Ivy Tech transcripts for dual credit to other universities to save them money. I feel so accomplished, grateful, and humbled to receive this honor. Additionally, it feels good to be acknowledged and seen for all the good. I will turn over every stone for children because I want others to do the same for my child.
