In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Hampton University School of Religion encourages faith communities to lead with compassion, advocacy, and healing.

A recent article from the United Methodist Church reminds us that mental health is both a personal and public concern, impacting millions of individuals and families each year. The Church has a vital role in breaking stigma, creating safe spaces for honest conversation, and supporting access to holistic mental health care.

As followers of Christ, we are called not only to pray for healing, but to actively participate in the work of restoration, hope, and wellness for all.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

The Hampton University School of Religion proudly recognizes Dr. Jerome Clayton Ross as our Faculty of the Month.

Dr. Ross brings decades of wisdom, scholarship, and dedication to theological education and biblical studies. Currently serving as an Instructor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, he teaches courses including Advanced Studies in Old Testament, Hebrew Language and Tools, and Biblical Hermeneutics.

With more than 40 years of teaching experience spanning institutions such as Virginia Union University, Randolph-Macon College, and Brightpoint Community College, Dr. Ross continues to shape and inspire future leaders through education, mentorship, and spiritual guidance.

When asked what he enjoys most about teaching at Hampton University School of Religion, Dr. Ross shared that he values “the opportunity to worship.” He describes academics as a form of worship and lifelong learning that allows him to help students envision alternate realities and counternarratives presented through the Bible.

We celebrate Dr. Ross for his unwavering commitment to academic excellence, spiritual growth, and student development. Thank you, Dr. Ross, for your faithful service and for continuing to inspire generations of scholars and leaders.

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5

This Memorial Day, the Hampton University School of Religion pauses to honor and remember the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

As a community grounded in inclusion, faith, leadership, and service, we recognize that true leadership is defined by one’s commitment to others. Today, we hold in our hearts the courage and selflessness of those who fought valiantly to protect the freedoms we are privileged to uphold each day.

With deepest gratitude and respect, we remember our fallen heroes and extend our appreciation to all who have served.
