A Dartmouth postdoc just settled a debate about your ancestors' feet.

Guarini alum Luke Fannin filmed wild mangabey monkeys climbing trees in Côte d'Ivoire and found their midfoot bends almost exactly as much as a chimpanzee's ankle. Different body parts, same job — and it helps answer a long-running question about our early ancestors' feet.

Carrie Colla '01, the Susan J. and Richard M. Levy Distinguished Professor in Health Care Delivery Science, has taught at Dartmouth since 2010. She'll become dean of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies on Sept. 1.

Ever wonder how your brain decides what's "worth the risk"?

Every choice you make, big or small, involves your brain quietly weighing risk against reward.
Jae Hyung Woo, a PhD candidate in cognitive neuroscience, is studying exactly how that happens. His research combines two major theories of decision-making to understand why some people adapt well to uncertainty, while others get stuck in patterns that don't serve them.

An Alumni Research Award funded the experiment — covering the participant recruitment his existing grants couldn't. That's alumni support turning into real neuroscience.

Down the line, this kind of work could help build gentler, more accessible treatments for conditions where decision-making goes off track.

Your new favorite study break just opened

The Connecticut River is open for business ☀️ Swim docks are open to Dartmouth ID holders 18+, typically noon–8 p.m. on weekends and 2–8 p.m. on weekdays (lifeguard hours permitting). Want to go further than the docks? Ledyard Canoe Club has kayaks, canoes, and lessons if you're feeling ambitious.

One rule to keep in mind: stick to the docks when lifeguards are off duty — no jumping or diving at Ledyard Bridge.

The Baker Bells at turned 100. Here's who made sure they sounded right.

For decades, a single Dartmouth music grad student has had the job of "minding" the Baker bells — keeping them on time and playing requests like "Happy Birthday" or "Hey Jude." For the past year, that's been Rebecca "Beccy" Abraham, GR '26, who also organized a concert on the Baker lawn last spring to show off what the bells can really do. "I want people to feel more ownership of our collective soundscapes," Beccy says.
