This month, Thayer established its Link (local section) of the Order of the Engineer, which was initiated in 1970 to “foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.”

We held our first ceremony at which 72 graduating and other eligible engineers were invited to accept a stainless steel ring and the Obligation of the Engineer:

"I am an Engineer. In my profession I take deep pride. To it I owe solemn obligations.

As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect; and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of the Earth’s precious wealth.

As an Engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the performance of duty and with deep fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost."

We are excited to announce that Douglas Van Citters ‘99 Th’03 Th’06, an expert in orthopedic biomaterials and artificial joints, has been named the 14th dean of Thayer School of Engineering ! (effective July 1)

Van Citters served as interim dean for the past 18 months, has been on the Dartmouth Engineering faculty for nearly two decades, and earned his AB, BE, MS, and PhD in engineering sciences from Dartmouth.

“It’s a privilege to lead a school that has shaped every dimension of my career from the moment I first entered Thayer’s doors in 1995,” Van Citters says. “What drew me here, and what keeps me here, has remained the same: a community of people who believe that engineers have a responsibility to ask not only ‘Can we build it?, but also to ask ‘Should we build it and for whom?’ That philosophy runs through everything we do here, and it’s what I intend to protect and strengthen as dean.”

The team arrived safely in Loudon, NH yesterday for the 20th annual competition. They participated in today's design and presentation events and are getting ready for tomorrow's acceleration and autocross runs.

We’re excited to announce the keynote speaker at this year’s Investiture ceremony on June 13 is Maria Klawe, mathematician, computer scientist, and longtime champion for expanding access to .

Previously the first woman to serve as president of College, Klawe now serves as president of , leading national efforts to strengthen K-12 STEM education through the recruitment, support, and retention of outstanding math and science teachers in public schools.

“She has led engineering and STEM institutions that deeply value the liberal arts and has spent her career working to transform how we teach math and science, at every level, to engage and inspire new generations of engineers and scientists. We are honored to welcome her to Investiture this June.” said Interim Dean Douglas Van Citters ‘99 Th’03 Th’06.
