Week one, and Dustin is already getting a front-row seat to high-level Haas service work.

Dustin Aylor stopped by the shop this week and shared what he has been working on during his internship with Haas and Phillips Corporation. He has already been around some serious troubleshooting and machine alignment work on a Haas UMC-500, including a swivel brake issue, Y-axis alignment, shimming, indicating X, Y, and Z, checking flatness, and seeing how a swivel checker is used to verify rotary axis accuracy.

That may sound like a lot for the first week, but that is exactly what makes this opportunity so valuable. He is not just watching someone push buttons. He is seeing the real side of advanced manufacturing service work, where precision matters, details matter, and every thousandth has a reason behind it.

Dustin said he is having a blast, learning a ton, and loving the opportunity to work with Phillips and Haas. We are proud to see him representing TCAT Harriman and continuing to grow in this trade.

This is what workforce development is supposed to look like: students getting connected with industry, learning from professionals, and seeing firsthand what a career in advanced manufacturing can become.

The UMC-750 represents the newest generation of 5-axis machining technology from Haas Automation, Inc. featuring advanced controls and industry-leading capabilities. A machine of this caliber could easily be found in an advanced manufacturing facility anywhere in the world yet it is right here at TCAT-Harriman, ready to train the next generation of machinists this fall.

Even more exciting, this machine is housed inside a brand-new, state-of-the-art training facility designed to advance technical education and expand opportunities for students across multiple programs at TCAT-Harriman. This incredible investment in workforce development would not have been possible without the support and funding provided through Tennessee state legislation approved by Governors Bill Haslam and Bill Lee.

A special thank you to Haas Automation for being an outstanding industry partner and for supporting students through scholarship opportunities that help prepare them for successful machining careers. One step closer. Last week TCAT Harriman performed an official flag raising at the new TCAT Harriman campus located at 200 Patton Lane. President Ayers said “The flag raising marked this summer of 2026 as a monumental game changer for Roane County and the surrounding areas." TCAT Harriman is preparing to open the new campus by September. Ayers said “This beautiful building designed by Barber McMurry Architects (BMA) and built by Blaine Construction Corporation set a new standard for technical education in the region. The partnership between TCAT Harriman, Blaine Construction and BMA has been excellent during the building process."

A special shout out for the flag raising at the new campus. Rockwood Electric Utility and Harriman Fire Department showed up with a bucket truck and ladder truck to assist TCAT with the hardware check on the 80 foot pole as they prepared to raise the flag.

Oak Ridge and Karns High School students partnered with Methodist Medical Center to conduct a simulated code yellow exercise that entailed a hypothetical active shooter and improvised explosive device explosion. TCAT Harriman students were excited to provide mock “injuries” for each of the victims.

TCAT Harriman attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Kairos Power's Hermes II Nuclear Reactor project today. One employee noted that the industry’s future professionals are still in high school, and Kairos is excited to be a part of preparing the workforce of the future.

Roane County Executive Wade Creswell spoke on the urgency of nuclear energy and how Kairos Powers has innovated a bold time line in just over a 1 year and the excitement of the mission happening in Roane County.
