How should we measure the success of AI systems?

New research led by Harrisburg University doctoral student Tanmay Sah explores a critical question in AI: not just whether AI agents complete tasks, but whether they do so safely.

The paper, "The Verifier Tax: Horizon Dependent Safety-Success Tradeoffs in Tool Using LLM Agents," was accepted to the inaugural Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on AI and Agentic Systems (CAIS) and recognized as one of the conference’s highlighted papers.

The research found that some AI agents achieved successful outcomes through unsafe actions, underscoring the need for evaluation frameworks that measure both task success and safety. The study was co-authored by HU faculty member Dr. Kayden Jordan and collaborators from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Utah.
