PACIE’s vision for the Commonwealth’s future is one of people rooted in their local communities, but connected to and working with others here and abroad to identify and solve problems and promote opportunities for further personal, professional, organizational, and societal development. PACIE envisions Pennsylvania as a national leader in international education and the production of globally-com
petent graduates. We see the achievement of this status as necessary to the Commonwealth’s ability to flourish in the years ahead. Systematic global collaboration in education can lay the groundwork for the expansion of markets and increased foreign direct investment( FDI); can create ongoing personal relationships that contribute to the emergence of global innovation networks, through which people pursue new approaches to the problems we face; and can build healthy appreciation of diverse cultures and nations, an attitude that will increase a students' effectiveness in the global marketplace and improve inter-group experiences in their local communities. PACIE believes that the Commonwealth has a compelling interest in the preparation of globally-competent graduates through the use of international/intercultural activities, and the formal curriculum. All sectors of society, not just schools and colleges, can and must contribute to this process. All students must have the opportunity to learn with others regardless of their physical location. International education, study abroad, and routine encounters with students from diverse countries and cultures can no longer remain elite activities: we must move rapidly from elite to inclusive global education, and we must do so with conviction. This conviction is born of an understanding that perhaps for the first time in human history, given the documented link between human diversity and innovative capacity, we can now view human diversity not simply as a problem to be managed, but as a powerful strategic asset for organizations of all kinds.
