Meet Haley Nelson, rising third-year student and Center for Equity and Justice Fellow.

Haley chose Widener Law Commonwealth for the sense of community she felt from the very first visit. Now, she's paying that welcoming spirit forward by helping students from underrepresented backgrounds prepare for the LSAT and find their path into the legal profession.

As part of the Pathway Program, she interviews applicants, writes recommendation letters, tracks student progress, and mentors aspiring lawyers.

"This is real work we're doing to impact real people's lives. People are desperate to get into this program. This is not a light lift." — Haley Nelson

Something new is launching at Widener Law Commonwealth, and it was built entirely by students.

On June 2 at 7 p.m., the first episode of Late Night in the Library premieres, marking the debut of a student-run podcast initiative created by our Entertainment Law Fellows.

The project features two distinct series: Late Night in the Library, focused on candid conversations about life as a law student and conversations with alumni and faculty, and The Final Deposition, which explores legal issues, culture, media, and industry professionals.

Meet Darryl Hunt Jr. '26.

As a Center for Equity and Justice Fellow, Darryl has spent his time at Widener Law Commonwealth doing something many talk about, but few actually do: reaching back. From mentoring aspiring law students and supporting LSAT prep to traveling to Arkansas for community service, he has been intentional about expanding access to legal education for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

"Success to me looks like fighting for justice, fairness, and equality. Being someone that doesn't just seek a conviction but seeks justice and equal treatment of the justice system for all." — Darryl Hunt Jr. '26

Tara Schellhorn ’07 didn’t come to law school with a perfectly mapped-out plan. She came ready to work hard, figure things out, and lean into every opportunity along the way.

Today, she’s a principal at Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, an international leader in bankruptcy and restructuring law, and the incoming global chair of IWIRC.

“It’s very solution-oriented. That’s what I like most, figuring out creative ways to make a bad situation better.”

Prof. Mary Kate Kearney and Prof. Anna Hemingway recently presented at the Empire State Legal Writing Conference at Fordham Law School, sharing ideas rooted in something simple but powerful, staying with students through one of the hardest parts of law school, bar prep.

Their presentation, “Staying with Them Through the Bar: Lessons in Support and Learning,” explored how mentorship, meaningful feedback, and strong support systems can help students succeed, drawing parallels to the way great coaches guide athletes through high-pressure moments.
