Harrisonburg Public Utilities will conduct water line work on May 17 requiring the closure of the Reservoir Street and University Boulevard intersection from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and interrupting water service to multiple properties and businesses in the area for much of the project. Those properties seeing water service impacts should have received notification from Public Utilities, but I went and made sure to speak with each business last week. This should not impact water to any JMU property.

The attached map shows where road closures will take place on Reservoir Street and University Boulevard and the impact on area secondary roads. You will not be able to pass through the intersection while this work takes place. Vehicles will be able to reach businesses in the area marked in yellow that is closed to thru traffic but not pass through the intersection. The map also highlights properties in blue that will see water service impacts.

Any updates to this project will be posted to the City’s social media pages when available. Contact Michael Parks in the City Manager’s office with questions. 540-432-7701

Harrisonburg Public Utilities waterline repair work will close a section of West Grace Street on Thursday, April 30, with work starting at approximately 8:00am. Work will be focused in the area of the railroad crossing. Access to the Grace Street Apartments will be available only from Main Street during this time. The Chesapeake Avenue Parking Deck will be accessible from Main Street and High Street. An estimated repair time is unavailable until crews are able to survey the waterline break.

Due to this road work, the ICS route will detour to avoid Grace St. when leaving Memorial Hall to go to the Quad and East Campus.

Students living at Grace St Apartments or parking in the Chesapeake Parking deck to use the bus should catch the ICS at Memorial Hall or Wampler Hall bus shelters.

Getting to and from JMU is easier than you might think.

The most common question we hear at Admitted Student Fairs and Orientation Fairs is “How do I get home?” The answer is often the Virginia Breeze.

From JMU, students can take the Virginia Breeze to Dulles International Airport, Amtrak’s Union Station in Washington, DC, and destinations in Southwest Virginia. Through the Danville Connector, service also extends into North Carolina. Beginning April 20, Virginia Breeze is adding new eastbound service to Charlottesville, Richmond, Williamsburg, Newport News, and Virginia Beach, expanding access even further.

For coach bus service only for JMU breaks, College Transit can take students from JMU to the Northeast (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York). Students traveling to airports or seeking more flexibility may prefer Adventures‑N‑Travel, which offers airport transportation as well as smaller, custom trips tailored to travelers' needs.

Together, these services give students multiple safe, dependable options for getting home, traveling for breaks, or catching a flight. No car required.

Keep in mind that for high-volume times like Fall Break, Thanksgiving, and Winter Break, many vendors will have multiple buses serving the same route. Buses will not always arrive at exactly the same time. Rest assured, if you bought a ticket, you have a seat. Please be patient and wait for the next bus.

Tickets for all coach bus services can be purchased on the vendor’s website. JMU provides the bus stop.

HDPT City Routes are numbered 1–6, while JMU Routes are named by colors (Blue, Black, Green, Yellow, Pink, Purple).
All HDPT and JMU buses are FARE FREE.

You can use City Routes to travel across campus, too!

Route 3 enters campus along Duke Drive near the Villages, then continues up Grace Street to Memorial Hall before looping off‑campus.

Route 3 reaches Duke Drive at about :35 past every hour, from 6am–6pm. It’s about a 15‑minute ride from the Villages area to Memorial Hall.

When you arrive, Route 3 stops along High St./Route 42 directly in front of Memorial Hall — not at the ICS stop in the parking lot.

To ride back to campus, just hop on the ICS bus that is first in line right outside the door at Memorial Hall.

Bonus: City Routes are usually much less crowded than the ICS!

🗺️ Check the maps to see the best way home.

⏰ Quick reminders:

• ICS runs every 30 minutes (7pm–11pm)

• Yellow Line runs until 10pm

• Shopper runs 1–10pm
