Today’s MBA Duke of the Day is Andrew Zapanta, a Capital Budget Analyst at UVA Health. Andrew is getting ready to graduate from the MBA program this weekend. Getting an MBA was a dream of Andrew's for many years. It wasn't until Spring 2023 that the timing in his career and personal life made it possible for him to start the program. Andrew says that “it was the encouragement of my spouse and an alum I met at an MBA info session that motivated me to finally apply!”

He valued the connections he made during the program, saying “personally, our cohort has bonded well together, as we have helped each other through career moves and family changes. It's been in honor to be part of Cohort 8 in this season called grad school.”

His advice to someone considering an MBA is to “attend an info session, talk to the MBA office staff, or better yet, seek out an alum of the program! Don't let your age be the reason to NOT apply for this program. Your perspective is valued, no matter your age!”

Outside of school and work, Andrew is an avid runner, having competed nationwide in multiple marathons. He enjoys being creative in the kitchen, photography, and family adventures with his wife and daughter.

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, Andrew. We are proud of everything you’ve accomplished!

Our MBA Duke of the Day is Jay Pence, with UVA McIntire School of Commerce. Jay decided to pursue an MBA to keep growing in his career and push himself professionally. He said, "I wanted to build new skills, become a stronger leader, and connect with others who are working through similar challenges. It felt like the right next step to expand my perspective and open up new opportunities.”

Jay says one of the most impactful parts of the JMU MBA program has been “gaining the skills and confidence to take the next step in my career.” During his time in the MBA program, he landed a new role that better positions him for long-term growth and development.

He has this advice to offer someone considering the JMU MBA program: “If you’re going to do it, devote yourself fully—show up ready to learn, engage with the material, and invest in building strong connections with your cohort. The relationships and lessons you gain are worth it, but it takes real commitment to get the most out of the experience.

Outside of school and work, Jay enjoys spending time with his wife Taylore and their two daughters, Charlie and Rowan, as well as running, golfing, and playing pickleball.

Jay, congrats on your upcoming graduation in December! We are proud of everything you’ve achieved at JMU.

Today’s MBA Duke of the Day is Chris Cole, an IT Project Manager at Booz Allen Hamilton. Chris decided to pursue his MBA to advance his career and develop his business acumen. He says that he's “an advocate for lifelong learning and becoming a Double Duke felt like the best next move.”

Chris has this insight to share with anyone considering an MBA at JMU: “Everyone comes from a different background, and learning to apply concepts with all the shared experiences from your cohort really reinforces principles learned in the program. My advice to future students is to dive in. Commit yourself to continuous improvement and take the leap. You won't regret it.”

Chris and his wife Ada met at JMU and now live in Richmond, VA with thier newborn daughter, Eleanor, and Labradoodle, Duke. In his free time, he enjoys football, working out, and spending time with friends and family.

Honoring JMU MBA alumnus, Marty Grenn, recipient of the Pentagon Memorial Service Award.

As he retires after an extraordinary 41-year career in public service, Mr. Grenn exemplifies the impact and integrity we strive to instill in every JMU MBA graduate.

Since earning his MBA from JMU in 1982, he has served across the Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the Department of the Navy, where his leadership helped drive innovation, accountability, and fiscal excellence.

Over his career, Mr. Grenn led audit teams producing over $1.7 billion in savings for the federal government — and helped shape policy through his work with the U.S. Senate, Department of Defense, and Department of the Navy.

We are proud to celebrate his well-deserved Pentagon Memorial Service Award and the lasting legacy he leaves on the Department of Defense and beyond.

Congratulations, Mr. Grenn — and thank you for representing the JMU MBA community with distinction! 💜

Our MBA Duke of the Day is Zach Turner, PMP, an Accounting Manager with Cognite. Zach decided to pursue his MBA because he wanted to challenge himself intellectually and professionally, and become immersed in business leadership.

Zach was born in Virginia and has always gravitated towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. However, a career choice took him to Arizona, and the demands of work and maintaining a fixer upper made education at a Virginia school seem unlikely to him. Nevertheless, he said that “with support from my friends, family, and organization, I was able to choose a program like JMU that fit my needs.”

Zach says his experience at the JMU MBA Program has exceeded his expectations so far: “I’ve had the immeasurable experience of engaging and collaborating with top minds across industries to not only build my network, but to make some long-lasting friends along the way. Furthermore, this program has given me the guidance to find new opportunities, leveraging my skills to find a new position as a manager for a start-up AI tech firm. I am excited to practice what I am learning in the real world.”

Zach lives in Arizona with his wife and their dog, Salem. He enjoys golf, spending time with his family, and exploring all of the hidden gems Arizona has to offer.

Thank you for your insight, Zach! We are proud to have you as a member of the JMU MBA family.

JMU MBA students see an average 23% salary increase when they graduate.

That number represents more than income. It represents growth, opportunity, and the power of a stronger strategic perspective. To our current students and alumni: you’re proof that the ROI of this experience goes far beyond the classroom.

Proud of what our Dukes continue to achieve!

🌴 We’re heading to Miami!

We’re excited to share that in January 2026, first-year JMU MBA students from our Innovation, Information Security, and Executive Leadership cohorts will travel to Miami, Florida for a brand-new domestic business residency experience.

Students will have the chance to connect and collaborate across cohorts as we explore Miami. Our trip includes a stay in Biscayne Bay, several business visits, a Little Havana cultural tour, an Everglades excursion, and so much more!

This new Miami experience joins our signature 10-day global business residency (this year in South Korea and Taiwan), expanding the hands-on, community-driven learning our students value most.

At the JMU MBA program, we believe that some of the best learning happens when students explore new places, engage with industry, and grow together. 🌎

✈️ Something new is on the horizon for JMU MBA students.

We’re thrilled to announce that in January 2026 our first-year MBA students will embark on a new business residency experience that blends business insight and cultural exploration in one of America’s most dynamic cities.

This new residency helps students build meaningful cohort connections early in their MBA journey while applying what they learn through immersive, real-world experiences. It complements our signature Global Business Residency — a 10-day international experience available to students at the end of the JMU MBA program. This year’s destinations: South Korea and Taiwan.

Where are we heading next? Let’s just say… there will be sunshine, palm trees, engaging business visits, and plenty of hands-on learning outside the classroom. 🌞 We can't wait!!

Stay tuned — destination reveal coming later this week!
