On May 28, UConn School of Social Work's Milagros Marrero-Johnson, MSW, attended the Latinas in Leadership Symposium held at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Milagros is senior director of strategic initiatives and community engagement for the School of Social Work and adjunct faculty.

"It is not often that I attend a conference where I feel such an immediate sense of belonging," she says. "As Latina leader, it was both affirming and reassuring to hear that many of the barriers I have faced along my journey are shared experiences among other Latina women. There is power in knowing we are not alone and that we can overcome these challenges."

Latinas In Leadership is a leadership accelerator that helps Latinas strengthen their identity-centered leadership skills, without the systemic barriers that limit their economic mobility and representation.

The UConn School of Social Work Innovations Institute is a founding member of the newly formed Children’s Behavioral Health Collective (CBH) Collective! 🧑‍🦱🧒👧

With approximately one in five children in the U.S. experiencing a mental health condition each year, the need for community- and home-based behavioral health services has never been more urgent. Too often, gaps in care lead children and youth into systems like child welfare and juvenile justice, which can further exacerbate trauma.

No single organization can fix these systemic gaps alone. That is why the CBH Collective brings together extensive national expertise across sectors to transform child-serving systems, advance cross-sector collaboration, and develop solutions grounded in data, evidence, and lived experience.

Anxiety can profoundly affect children and teens with cancer, influencing not only their emotional well-being but also their medical experiences and quality of life. In a new paper published May 18 in Pediatric Blood & Cancer, researchers including UConn School of Social Work Ph.D. student Laura Moynihan offer a practical guide for pediatric oncology teams to better identify, assess, and support anxiety in young patients throughout diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, recurrence, and end-of-life care.

The article emphasizes that anxiety can appear in many ways—sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle—and highlights the importance of compassionate, interdisciplinary care. 💛

As editor-in-chief of Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services, UConn School of Social Work Professor Cristina Mogro-Wilson believes mentorship is one of the most important investments she can make in the future of social work scholarship.

In an editorial published in the May 2026 issue of Families in Society, Dr. Mogro-Wilson explains how mentorship is a cornerstone of the social work profession.

"Behind every published article is a network of scholars—authors, reviewers, mentors, and editors—all who contribute their time and expertise to advancing the social work knowledge base," she writes. "This shared commitment underscores an important truth: The future of social work scholarship depends not only on the research we conduct but also on the scholars we mentor." ✍️🔍

On June 3, join UConn School of Social Work's Sukhmani Singh and fellow panelists for a discussion on “Our Voices, Our Rights: Civic Engagement After Reentry.”

Learn more about the barriers to reentry such as voting, housing, and employment.

Singh’s scholarship examines entrenched and intersecting inequities within the criminal and juvenile legal system(s), with a focus on marginalized youth, and formerly incarcerated people. Her work has informed policy discussions and systems reform across Connecticut—contributing to deliberations of the Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee, the Connecticut Sentencing Commission, and other state bodies.

The talk takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 at Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street at the Travelers Center for Arts and Culture.
