Congratulations to the class of 2021. Here is one student's story :
--How did you decide to come to Capital?---
"Before coming to Capital Community College, I had only two years living in the U.S. I came from the Dominican Republic, leaving behind a whole life and family. I was afraid of the drastic change of moving to another country; Like many things in life, I had no option but to move. When I arrived here, I struggled to get my green card because of my age but in the end, I was not being well informed. After two years of struggle, I finally got my green card. I was able to get a job and spend my days working. At that time, I was desperate to go to school, but I thought that I could not adapt easily to college here; I was still afraid to take new risks and changes. My sister felt bad seeing me imitating myself. She saw me going from being a leader at a university in the Dominican Republic to just being a good employee at a retail store; that bothered her. So, after a few months of working, we went to school research. We went to different colleges and programs but everything was always complicated. One day we came to Capital Community College, just to ask about the ESL program. Every staff that I met was so nice that I couldn’t resist but to feel warm and glad. We decided to enroll in the ESL program at Capital. I can say that since the beginning, we haven't stop enjoying our time there. The college gave us an option and we took them. It gave us a vision of the future and the chance to study something we liked. We discovered new things and a way to not be afraid anymore."
--What are some favorite experiences at CCC?---
"Joining a student club. In the Dominican Republic, I was the president of the Modern Languages major. That was one of the things that I missed the most when I left my country. Here in Capital, I had the chance to continue being a leader and helping others. I had the chance to be Lasa’s President, Director, and Producer in Capital Student News and a member of the Student Senate. Also, one of the best experiences was going to leadership and empowerment conferences. We as students went to other states and met with other people. That gave us the chance to network with other students and open our minds and confidence."
