Did you know that Hastings College has an Archive full of historical treasures?
πŸ“š
Well, we do!
πŸ“š
And in addition to providing (yet another) secret spot on campus for historians to hide with a good book, the Archives also provide a great opportunity for our students to actually β€œDo History”, and gain some useful, real world, work experience digitizing, cataloguing and preserving valuable (and valuable…ish) documents and artifacts for future generations of historians!
πŸ“š
Special shout out and thanks to all of our historians, like the incredible Olivia Perez (pictured here!!), who have volunteered their time this summer to help get the HC archives back on track!!! β™₯️

We're a bit late to the party on this one, but this kind of achievement deserves a whole summer of celebration! Rachel Schmalz '21 was recently awarded a Fulbright to study in Moldova beginning this September!

As you can see from her stack of reading material, Rachel's interest in the former Eastern Bloc runs deep! She was studying abroad in Bulgaria when Covid rudely interrupted, so we're thrilled she has another chance to continue her studies in Eastern Europe!

One of the best things about HC history students is that they tend to find themselves in all sorts of interesting places. Here's hoping we can get some account takeovers next school year so that we can live vicariously through them! 🀞

Congratulations again, Rachel, on this massive achievement!

What do historians do once grades are in? Trawl antique stores on vacation, of course! πŸ€“ Look at this 1914 postcard I found in Kansas City! Did you know our dear old McCormick was once a dormitory? @ River Market Antiques

Bonus historian skills test: read the cursive on the back. 😊

Should you be doing end-of-block things but are instead scrolling along on Instagram? Me too.

Hearken back with me to a time free from the cares of final papers and final exams (aka last Saturday) when we enjoyed Grillmaster Avent's Amazing Pizza Oven and a great time of food and friends (possibly in that order.) A celebration of Senior Sem, Sophomore Sem, and PAT, we may have inadvertently established a new History Department tradition.

Special shout out to vaccines and nice weather, which combined to give us the kind of time together that has been far too rare in the past year!

If you know one thing about historians, you know that we love a good mystical and esoteric ceremony.* Last evening, we had the delight of initiating four new members into Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary society, via one such mystical and esoteric ceremony.

Congratulations to Megan (our first-ever math major?), Treygan, Sam, and Amani!

Phi Alpha Theta is an honorary for history students who have at least a 3.0 overall GPA, a 3.1 GPA in history classes, and who have taken at least 12 hours of history classes. Congratulations to our new members!

*We also love footnotes. @ Hastings College

It has been a year of limited social engagement, so it was really wonderful to get Phi Alpha Theta together at the Dougherty fire pit for a s'more and story night! (And hooray for early April weather cooperating!)

Dr. Catherine Biba will be giving a talk tomorrow (Wednesday Oct. 14th) for the Hastings College Lecture Series Student Symposium about the fight for the 19th Amendment. It will be streamed online, and will hopefully be available later. Her lecture will be held from 2:30-3:30, but there are a number of other great speakers too, so give the whole list a look! The schedule and link to the Zoom webinar can be found here:
