Congratulations to Dr. Candice Salyers, associate professor of dance in the School of Performing and Visual Arts, on the international recognition of Orca We Remember.

Salyers collaborated with South Korean artist Jae Chung Kim and composer Jieun Lee to create the dance film, which explores environmental crises affecting our oceans and marine life, including the orca whale.

Orca We Remember was one of only 11 films selected from more than 300 international submissions for screening at the Korea International Ocean Film Festival. The film has also been endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development program and UNESCO's Blue Thread initiative for its role in advancing ocean advocacy and ocean literacy.

Nearly 3,000 pounds of debris collected along the Mississippi Gulf Coast helped bring “Toxic Beauty: Plastic’s Hidden Cost” to life at the Mississippi Aquarium 🐠

Opened in partnership with Southern Miss School of Ocean Science and Engineering researchers and local collaborators, the interactive exhibit features artwork created from materials collected during local beach cleanups.

Led by Dr. Kristina Mojica and Rachel Lancaster as part of a National Science Foundation-funded research project, the exhibit explores the impact of plastic pollution on marine and coastal environments.

Open now through September 7!

Ashe Davis, a junior in the Honors College and School of Polymer Science and Engineering, has been named a Barry Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate honors in STEM.

Selected from approximately 5,000 applicants nationwide, Ashe is the 30th Southern Miss student to receive the award, which recognizes sophomores and juniors with exceptional promise in research and innovation. She was nominated by her research mentor, Dr. Tristan Clemons.

“Receiving the Goldwater Scholarship is genuinely something I never considered for myself,” Ashe said. “It serves as a lesson to myself that there are no limitations to what I can achieve.”

Congratulations, Ashe!
