Research in Motion! 💡🔬🧪
As a Carnegie R1 research institution, Southern Miss generates more than $100 million annually with innovative and life-changing research that is woven into the fabric of the university.
A few highlights from the spring semester:
➡️ A team from Southern Miss’ School of Computing Sciences and Computer Engineering earned first place at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Southeast USA Regional. Southern Miss computing faculty conduct research in areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, bioinformatics, image and video processing and cybersecurity and give students opportunities to participate.
➡️ Southern Miss has deployed the AquaFort, an offshore floating aquaculture platform designed to advance research and innovation in sustainable seafood production. Scientists from the University’s Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center worked with project partners to assemble the structure and secured it using a four-point mooring system prior to the winter and spring grow-out season.
➡️ Dr. Zhe Qiang, associate professor in the School of Polymer Science and Engineering, has received a $60,000 Scialog Fellowship to develop more sustainable multilayer film materials. This research will address recycling challenges in multilayer film materials in hopes of creating a new generation of inherently sustainable polymers.
