Message from Department Chair, Dr. Sarah Taylor, regarding the tragedy at San Francisco General Hospital:
I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Alberto Rangel, Social Worker at San Francisco General (https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/sf-general-slain-social-worker-identified-21228831.php). Alberto was killed by a client at work while attempting to de-escalate the situation and protect a colleague. Alberto had worked at SFGH for 12 years and was known as a very dedicated colleague as well as an artist and dancer. Speaking on behalf of all of our faculty, we extend our deepest sympathies to Alberto's family, friends, colleagues, and clients.
Prior to this incident, workers at SFGH had been calling for more support and security not only in relation to this client, but in general. We will advocate with our professional associations, such as the National Association of Social Workers-CA and the California Association of Deans and Directors of Social Work, for more protections for social workers.
If you would like to talk with someone about this tragedy, please reach out to me or any member of the faculty - we are here for you and in community with you. You can also access Counseling Services at CSUEB.
