Labor Day marks the unofficial transition from summer to fall in the garden, making now the perfect time to start preparing for the next season. MU Extension horticulturist David Trinklein recommends focusing on a few key tasks to keep your garden productive and healthy.

◾Harvest late-season vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squash.
◾Plant cool-season favorites like lettuce, spinach, kale, broccoli and radishes.
◾Divide overcrowded perennials, including hostas, irises and daylilies.
◾Seed or overseed cool-season lawns and fertilize established turf.
◾Begin fall cleanup by removing dead plant material that can harbor pests and diseases.

A little effort now can help set the stage for a healthier garden and landscape next spring.

A new soybean pest has been confirmed in Missouri for the second time.

MU Extension state crops entomologist Ivair Valmorbida confirmed the latest finding of the soybean tentiform leafminer in Macon County on Aug. 19. First detected in Missouri in 2025, this emerging pest feeds inside soybean leaves, creating distinctive "mines" that can reduce leaf area.

Farmers are encouraged to scout soybean fields, especially along field edges near wooded areas, and contact their local MU Extension agronomist if they suspect soybean tentiform leafminer activity. Researchers are continuing to study the insect's distribution and potential impact on soybean production.

Durnell family selected as Hickory County’s Missouri Farm Family

Hermitage, MO ― Zane & Rachel Durnell and family of Weaubleau were among the Missouri families honored at the 69th annual Missouri Farm Family Day on August 17th during the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.

The Durnell family was selected as the Hickory County Missouri Farm Family by University of Missouri Extension and the Hickory County Farm Bureau.

Each year, the Missouri State Fair designates a day to celebrate farm families from across the state who are engaged in production agriculture, demonstrate strong community involvement, and participate in outreach and youth development programs such as 4-H or FFA.

Farm Family Day is made possible through the support of the Missouri Farm Bureau, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the Missouri State Fair Commissioners, the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and MU Extension.

“One of the highlights of the Missouri State Fair is the chance to recognize farm families from every corner of the state,” said Missouri State Fair Director Jason Moore. “Each family has its own story, but all share a dedication to agriculture, community, and helping the next generation succeed. We’re grateful for everything they do to support Missouri’s agricultural heritage and future.”
