We’re celebrating Alex Tyeryar ’21 ’22 and Jackie Occhipinti ’21! 🥂💍

Alex and Jackie met during their senior year at High Point University, and their story has come full circle. They got engaged on July 3, 2025, in Stone Harbor and are planning to say “I do” in Charleston.

Alumni Spotlight: Lauren Perrone ’19 🎓

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting Lauren Perrone and her impactful work in the field of mental health.

Since graduating from HPU, Lauren has built an impressive career - living internationally, earning two master’s degrees (MA in Human Rights Practice and an MSW), and now working as a medical social worker at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Albany, New York.

She’s currently pursuing her clinical license, working part-time in private practice, and specializing in grief counseling - continuing her passion for making a meaningful impact in people’s lives.

Congrats, Lauren! The future is bright 🌟

Remembering 1st Lt. Pearley H. Scarborough Jr.

Pearley H. Scarborough Jr. graduated from High Point College in 1940. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, trained as a P-40 fighter pilot, and was assigned to the 27th Bomb Group in the Philippines.

Following the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the 27th Bomb Group fought as infantry during the Battle of Bataan, becoming the only Air Force unit in U.S. history captured as an entire organization. Lt. Scarborough was taken prisoner on April 9, 1942, and endured the horrors of the Bataan Death March.

He was later imprisoned at Cabanatuan Prison Camp. In October 1944, while being transported to Japan aboard the Arisan Maru, the ship was torpedoed in the South China Sea. Of the 1,782 American POWs aboard, only nine survived.

Today, 1st Lt. Pearley H. Scarborough Jr. is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Stephanie Helsabeck '94 🏫💜

Dr. Helsabeck is in her second year as an adjunct professor at High Point University, and she loves sharing what it was like to be a student here, bringing her HPU experience full circle!

After graduating from High Point University, she began her career as a teacher in North Carolina public schools before retiring from full-time teaching in 2021. Dr. Helsabeck now continues her passion for education as a part-time ESL support specialist at Atkins High School and as an adjunct professor at High Point University. She enjoys staying connected to and contributing to such a vibrant community.

Paul Calkins Jr., Vice President of Continental Strategy, has been recognized in Washingtonian’s “Washington DC’s 500 Most Influential People of 2026” for his work shaping mobility and transportation policy at the federal level. Enlisted by Tesla to lead lobbying efforts, Calkins focuses on advancing the company’s interests in auto technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, battery storage, and electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. He also serves on the Young Alumni Council, continuing his commitment to supporting and engaging fellow alumni.
