With a very heavy heart, we want to share that Dr. Steve Newman passed away on August 24.

In the spring, he was recognized at the Alumni Awards with the Faculty/Staff Strongest Influence Award. As part of the event, a video was produced where he talked about arriving at NKU in 1972 and various milestones along the way (YouTube link: https://youtu.be/5Bk-htzWKbI?si=QkUt3YaKMRqPNOif). This quote from Dr. Newman was taken from the video: “NKU is my home. I've been here for 53 years. What I love most about teaching at NKU is the students. I enjoy interacting with them. I get a charge out of seeing them light up when they understand something. I just love teaching - that's why I've been here for so long.” Teaching mathematics was his ultimate joy, and he felt immense pride for all of his students.

Dr. Newman requested that no funeral be held, and his family supports his wishes. A site has been created for us to share thoughts and memories of him as a way to extend our sympathy to his family. This could be a lesson learned, a funny story, or a favorite memory from a class. If you would like to share a story, you can do so at this link: https://www.newlywords.com/remembering-steve-newman. We will come together later this fall as members of his NKU family to celebrate and commemorate his life and impact here. As those plans are made, details will be shared broadly.

As we head into election season, we're happy to announce that Dr. Russ Goodman will be our invited speaker at the 2024 Sehnert Lecture. Make plans to join us on Monday, October 7 to learn more about the mathematical underpinnings of the presidential election process. The lecture will begin at 7:30pm in the Otto Budig Theatre. A banquet dinner will precede the lecture in the Student Union Ballroom at 6pm. For dinner reservations, please visit https://buff.ly/4d8m7Ns.

Last week included two events with lots to celebrate! The Celebration of Student Research & Creative Activity was part of Experiential Learning Week. Charlie Frederick, Reece Tolliver, and Kristoffe Wilson presented projects they've worked on as Consultants in the Burkardt Consulting Center. Blake Settle debuted two pieces in an art series entitled Entangled. His work explores the intersections of mathematics and art, and it was supported by the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) course. Congratulations to each of you for your excellent work!

On Thursday, we celebrated with the Academic Affairs Faculty/Staff Awards. Professor Laura Urbanski received the Excellence in Teaching & Instruction Award and Dr. Marla Lemmon's support of STEM-wide programming in CINSAM was recognized. We also took a moment to thank Dr. Steve Wilkinson & Dr. Phil McCartney for their combined 79 years of service. Their contributions are woven into the fabric of the department, and we wish them nothing but happiness in their retirement!

Math Awareness Month kicked off with the Kentucky Section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. Presentations by Northern Kentucky University students and faculty included:
* Roland Long (Senior mathematics major): Roland presented his work on A.A.Albert's cryptological contributions. This work was directed by Dr. Chris Christensen.
* Blake Settle (Freshman mathematics major): Blake discussed the intersection of mathematics and art with Dr. Lisa Holden & Dr. Steve Wilkinson. This was the focus of the department's first-year experience course.
* Dr. Dan McGee: Dr. McGee received the KYMAA's 2023 Award for Distinguished University Teaching of Mathematics and served as one of the invited conference speakers. He discussed his approach in the classroom to foster multi-representational thinking.

Congratulations to all on a wonderful slate of talks!

Our final for December commencement is An Ngo!

She had the following advice to share to future and current math/stat majors: "Work hard. Be serious and responsible. Do your homework. Contribute in class. Be excited to explore new concepts and ideas. Ask questions and seek help from your peers and professors. Be open to correction. Consider new opportunities. Care for and encourage others. Don't let anyone define your capability. Don't give up but have courage to do hard things as it is rewarding. See difficulties as opportunities to grow. Choose to have a good attitude and be content. Make friends and get involved. Enjoy your time here!"

Best of luck in your graduate studies, An!

Today's is Amber Manning!

Amber offered the following advice to future students: "I would advise students to just keep pushing! There are a few classes I struggled with, but it all is possible if you take time and devote yourself! It’s a hard 4 years but all worth it in the end."

We wish her the best of luck as she launches her career!

We’re counting down to commencement on Saturday with . Today’s graduate is Peter Lefkovitz!

When asked about positive experiences he had, Peter offered the following: “My first semester, I went to a math dinner, and was immediately introduced to Dr. Wilkinson, who was doing research that perfectly matched both my majors. Since then, we have been working together, and it’s been so much fun being able to integrate both math and music!”

We can’t wait to hear Peter’s mathematically influenced musical compositions!
