THE PASSING OF W. BRUCE LUNSFORD, CHASE COLLEGE OF LAW ALUMNUS AND BENEFACTOR

W. Bruce Lunsford had a vision for how law would be practiced in the future, and with his underwriting of the W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business + Technology at Chase, he ensured that generations of Chase graduates would be prepared for it.

Mr. Lunsford, who graduated from Chase in 1974 and went on to become Kentucky Secretary of Commerce, an entrepreneur, a venture capitalist and a thoroughbred owner and breeder, died Sept. 5 at Louisville, where he lived and was chairman of Lunsford Capital.

Of his impact on Chase, Dean Judith Daar said, “Bruce believed deeply in the potential of our students and understood that the practice of law must continually evolve to meet the needs of a changing world. Guided by his generosity and vision, in 2013 we established the W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business + Technology. In the ensuing years, the Academy has prepared hundreds of Chase students to become innovative, adaptable leaders. His legacy will live on through the Academy, the students, practitioners and scholars who carry his name, and the many lives transformed by his commitment to legal education. We will miss his bright, exuberant spirit and the joy he exuded for his beloved alma mater.”

As Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Lunsford was influential in expansion of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport; as an entrepreneur, he founded and operated companies primarily in the healthcare field; and as a thoroughbred owner and breeder, he was involved in the highest tier of thoroughbred racing, including serving on the board of fabled Churchill Downs.

STUDENTS IN the Chase Children’s Law Center Clinic had a no-pressure introduction recently to where they might be representing children and teens when the pressure is on: Kenton County Family Court Judge Acena Beck, a Chase alumna, gave them a first-person introduction to the courtroom where they might be at a counsel table and explained the operation of the court, so that when a day arrives that they appear before her on behalf of a client, they will feel like they have been there before.

KATHLEEN HIDY has joined the Chase faculty as a visiting assistant professor, teaching legal writing, and as assistant director of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy.
• Before Chase (and at Chase): She has been associate professor of legal studies at Xavier University in Cincinnati, an adjunct professor at Chase, a U.S. District Court law clerk, a law firm associate and an assistant prosecutor.
• Her legal education: She is a graduate of Columbia Law School in New York City.
• In the advocacy center: She will work with students in mock trials to help them develop courtroom and other advocacy skills.

WITH CLASSES just starting, students participating in the Children’s Law Center Clinic are sprinting into what they will need to know to represent children and teens in various types of legal matters during the year.
• Their prep work began with a “boot camp” to introduce some of the legal and ethical issues and available social services they might encounter.
• In the group photo of students and law center staff members, Professor Jennifer Brinkman, clinic director, is at center right, and in the other, Leann Kane, alternative sentencing worker with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy, is introducing students to concepts of adolescent development and how to best communicate with adolescents.

NINA COUCH has joined the Chase faculty as a visiting assistant professor, teaching legal writing and legal studies.
• Before Chase: She has been an adjunct professor and visiting assistant professor at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, and has practiced in the Louisville office of a large firm and in her own solo practice in Louisville.
• Her legal education: She is a magna cm laude graduate of Brandeis School of Law.
• And before that: With an undergraduate degree in accounting, she worked in a large accounting firm in healthcare auditing and taxation, and later was chief financial officer of a mortgage company.

MATTHEW SLOVIN has joined the Chase faculty as an assistant professor of law, teaching Contracts and Administrative Law.
• Previously: He was senior assistant solicitor of the City of Cincinnati, an associate in the Cincinnati firm of Keating, Muething & Klekamp, a federal judicial law clerk and, before law school, a newspaper reporter in Tennessee.
• Plus: He graduated from Harvard Law School in 2019, and has published several law review articles since then.
• In his own words: “Practicing locally allowed me to recognize the prominence Chase has in the Cincinnati legal market and its track record of producing skilled attorneys. Practice was deeply rewarding, but I found myself increasingly interested in the broader questions underlying our work. The chance to play even a small role in preparing future lawyers for the responsibilities of the profession is a privilege.”

EVERYONE KNOWS that job markets have their ups and downs, but for Chase graduates over the past 14 years, the trajectory has been steadily up.
• A new analysis by preLaw magazine, a publication for undergraduates considering law school, ranks Chase in the top 25 percent of law schools showing the most gains in employment for alumni shortly after graduation, in a comparison of employment rates for the three-year period 2012 through 2014 and the period 2023 through 2025.
• For graduating classes in that recent period, the law-related employment rates within 10 months of graduation have been around 90 percent, with the Class of 2023 topping the national average by 5 percentage points.

OUR NEW academic year is starting today, Aug. 24, and it already promises to be a busy and exciting one. Along with an array of classes, consider just some of what is ahead:
• A program the first month of first semester – presented by Office of Career Development leaders Lisa Moore and Kathy Kelly – to help first-year students position themselves early for careers three or four years from now.
• A few days into the semester, an initial session of the Center for Law and Entrepreneurship for students interested in the world of startups.
• Four new faculty members joining Chase: Matthew Slovin, teaching contracts and administrative law, Kathleen Hidy, for legal writing and assisting with advocacy teams, Nina Couch, legal writing and legal studies, and Will Aguilar-Geeslin, assistant director for law library services and an assistant professor.
• Two new student organizations joining the lineup of student activities: the Artificial Intelligence and Law Society and the Family Law Organization.
• Planning by Professor Marcia Ziegler to expand the legal writing workshop she introduced the past year.
• Work by Kelly Meurer, director of academic success and bar preparation, to add to that program.
• And the annual public lecture of the David and Nancy Wolf Program in Ethics and Professional Identity at Chase will be in September at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
All of that is just within the first few weeks of a new year, with more still ahead.
