The 16th Annual Northern Kentucky Winter Piano Piano Conference is now a “wrap.” This Friday and Saturday we had an exciting conference that opened with a Pre-Conference recital featuring Michael Delfin performing the Goldberg Variation on harpsichord. In attendance at the concert was Nina Keys-Campbell, a former early music/keyboard professor at NKU, and Jim Campbell, the original builder of our Harpsichord. It was amazing how beautifully the harpsichord sounded in Greaves Hall under the artistry of Dr. Delfin.

Today we enjoyed the expertise of Dr. Michelle Conda from UC-CCM, an expert in the field of Androgogy, who shared her experiences over her years as a Music Teacher and College Professor. Additionally, we had a combination of interactive sessions and lecture/demonstrations in literature that motivates and inspires the older student. Out special guest presenters included Amy Immerman, RMM, Clinton Pratt, Improvisation, and Louie Hemann, Jazz/Duke Ellington. Additionally, we had a short musicale that featured Clinton Pratt and Michael Ronstadt performing a movement of the Grieg Cello Sonata.

We are especially proud of our NKU students Meg Booker, Noah Jacobsen, and Maria Huff who gave inspiring performances and presentations that shared the wonderful progress we are making in the fields of performance/pedagogy at Northern Kentucky University.

Our special thanks to Provost Diana McGill, Acting Dean Bethany Bowling, Director Matt Albritton, Associate Director Ron Shaw, and Music Program Head Kurt Sander for their continued support to present this event annually to local music students and professors with no fees.

Join us on February 3, 2024 for the 16th Annual Conference beginning at 10:00 AM (registration and refreshments, 9:30 AM). Dr. Michelle Conda will deliver the Keynote Address, "Tales from the Crypt: growing old with my students!"

In Michelle's words, "You’ve probably heard many talks on adult learning and recreational music making-many probably from me. I started my trip into this field in my mid-twenties. I am now in my mid-sixties and my perspective has changed. My students are growing older, and so am I. This talk will share my tales from my crypt—the place I store my failures as a teacher and my fears of growing old."

The Fifteenth Northern Kentucky Winter Piano Pedagogy Conference is now in the recordbooks. We are grateful to Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts for hosting this wonderful event for the last fifteen years with the support of the NKyMTA and OhioMTA-Southwest District. We celebrated this year with an invitation to our esteemed guest artist, Leah Claiborne, who gave a wonderful recital, “I, Too, Sing America, featuring solo piano works by African American Composers. In addition to her fantastic performance, she coached four young Late-Intermediate/Early-Advanced in an inspirational Master Class, and shared the fruits of her research with local music teachers to expand the canon of standard repertoire for recital programs. This was one of our very best conferences. Thank you Dr. Claiborne for sharing your talents with the NKU, NKyMTA and OhioMTA-SW community.
