Hailing from the tiny town of Elsmore, Kan., it didn't take long for Becky Carlson to make a big impact once she stepped foot on the campus of Tabor College.
Following a solid junior college career at Allen County Community College (Iola, Kan.), Carlson arrived at Tabor in the fall of 1978 and competed in volleyball, basketball, track and field, and softball.
Carlson helped the 1978 Bluejay volleyball team to a 15-1 record in the KCAC, good for a conference title. During that season, the Bluejays posted 22 consecutive victories while earning wins over Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, the University of South Dakota, and Northwest Missouri State University. The following season, she once again helped guide the team to another KCAC title and was selected as the team's MVP.
On the basketball court, Carlson helped lead the Bluejays into postseason play and was named All-Conference for her efforts.
She also excelled in track and field, setting multiple school records in the shot put, 100-meter and 100-yard dash, 200-meter and 220-yard dash, along with the 440 relay and the 400 relay, winning the 100-yard dash four times during her junior season.
Following her time at Tabor, Carlson dedicated 34 years to education, teaching and coaching in Hillsboro and Iola, Kan. Throughout her coaching career, she guided her volleyball teams to nine state tournament appearances and one state title, and took her basketball teams to 11 state tournaments and three state titles.
Outside of athletics, Carlson remains active in her home church of Friends Home Lutheran Church and is dedicated to her family.
Carlson remains a pioneer of women's athletics, both at Tabor College and beyond.
HILLSBORO, Kan. — Becky Carlson cemented her place in Tabor College history as one of the institution's earliest standout three-sport female student-athletes, helping pave the way for generations of women who followed in Bluejay athletics.
