Congratulations Hope College Class of 2026! Your hard work and dedication have paid off—congratulations on this incredible milestone!

The Hope College Green Team is once again recycling this year's graduation caps and gowns, keeping them from being sent to a
landfill. Please drop them off near the Bookstore by Friday, May 15 to support our ongoing mission of greater campus sustainability.

We are partnering with Public Thread to upcycle the gowns into new products. Stay tuned for more details!

Also, be sure to sign up for our Alumni Sustainability Affinity Group

Hope Sustains was established to engage all concerned alumni as a reference and resource for the college’s educational mission focused around the increasingly critical issue of sustainability, helping to shape and support our alma mater’s own sustainability goals.

Hope Junior Tackles Big Project with County to Develop Small-Footprint Housing Designs
In response to a growing housing affordability gap, Hope College junior and civil engineering student Matt Daub ’27 is working with Ottawa County in Michigan to design and introduce smaller homes into the market. This project was the sole focus of his internship after he was hired by the county’s department of strategic impact as the only dedicated staff member.

In partnership with the City Of Holland, Michigan - City Hall, our campus has officially achieved Level II Arboretum Accreditation.

An arboretum is a living museum of trees and woody plants, grown and cared for by an organization committed to their stewardship. This Level II distinction recognizes that our campus now features over 100 labeled species, serving as a diverse botanical resource for our community.

Check out our trees! 🌳 Use our interactive map to discover every tree species on campus at the link in the comments.

Hope College’s Green2Go program highlights a practical path to waste reduction for smaller campuses. Reuse is prioritized, with compostable items used only when necessary in tighter retail spaces. Through clear expectations, student education, and staff engagement, the system has become normalized over time demonstrating that even with limited space and staffing, institutions can advance pollution prevention goals while maintaining a high-quality dining experience.

By making reuse the default rather than optional, the college reduced dependence on single-use and compostable packaging while maintaining efficient, predictable operations within a compact campus footprint.

Happy Earth Month from the Hope Advocates for Sustainability Team!

to see the full line-up of events.

We've partnered with groups from across campus and the community to bring you a month full of fun ways to learn how to live more sustainably at Hope (and beyond)!

Earth Month takes place every April and builds on the momentum of Earth Day to encourage people to think more deeply about how their daily choices affect the environment and neighbors here in Holland and around the world. On a college campus, Earth Month is a great opportunity for students to get involved in sustainability efforts and learn more about environmental issues.

Students can participate by attending events, reducing waste in dining halls, choosing reusable items, and volunteering with local environmental organizations (like our beach clean-up coming up on April 14th). Small actions, like unplugging electronics, biking instead of driving, or helping organize events, can make a meaningful impact while building a stronger culture of environmental responsibility across campus.
