Introducing our student spotlight for August 2020, Taneesha Hi’ilani Asing! Taneesha is a student at the College of Education and a member of Ke’olu.

Aloha mai kākou! I am currently in the College of Education program at UH Mānoa and will be graduating in spring 2021 with my BA in Elementary Education. I plan to stay home on O’ahu and teach here, so I can be close to my family and help our keiki of Hawai’i.

A fun fact about me is that I play music in a Hawaiian trio group called, Ke’olu. We have been playing music professionally for the last 6 years.

One college memory I will never forget, was when my cohort came to watch my gig performance at Shirokiya. With only just a few weeks of knowing each other, I was surprised to see almost all of them come out to support me at my show. It seriously meant the world to me seeing them there. From unfamiliar faces to second family, the amount of support we have for each other is unbelievable. Shout out to my cohort 403!

My advice for the underclassmen:

- GET A PLANNER.

- Always plan things in advance.

- Get your work done early so you can cruise ‘um after.

- Seek council always.

- Create study groups and keep yourself accountable!

- Build and maintain relationships with people that will bring you up, support you, and love you no matter what.

- Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions.

- Pack home lunch, save money!

- Remember why you started and let that be your motivation.

- Follow through, follow through, follow through.

- You are human, you will make mistakes so don’t get down on yourself! Learn from them and continue to move forward.

- Love yourself no matter what.

- Trust the process

We hope everyone is recovered from our too close for comfort hurricane scare this week. To bring some positive vibes to your feed, please allow us to introduce a ⭐️ Super Star ⭐️ alumni, Mollie Taylor!

Mollie graduated Spring 2020 from COE with her BEd in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. Last year was her first year of teaching! Read below to hear how things went for her...

1. The best part of my first year for me was working with a co-teacher because it gave me someone who I could bounce ideas off of and continue to learn with throughout the year. Plus it’s so much fun!

2. The most challenging part was saying goodbye to my kids (as they were moving on to kindergarten) and not spending the last few months with them in person.

3. In my first year of teaching, I was surprised by how exhausted I was at the end of each day!

4. My advice would be to get creative in your lesson planning / assignments. Just because you’ve seen something done one way doesn’t mean it’s the only way!

Check out our Student Spotlight for the month of February 2020.

Mario Doropan is a senior majoring in Elementary Education and Multilingual Learning. He is also pursuing a concurrent degree in Philippine Language and Literature: Ilokano. After graduation, Mario plans to work as a teacher serving upper-level elementary school students. He also plans to mentor and support other multilingual learning students in his community.

Fun Fact: Mario is a first-generation college student. The best advice Mario ever received was to always trust the process and be patient.

Best College Memory: Mario shared two memorable moments from his college journey. 1) Being part of the Cohort 407 Ohana. 2) Working and growing together with the students at his field placement school.

Thank you so much for sharing, Mario!

New Year means new student spotlights! Checkout our student for January 2020.

Ashley Deinla is a KRS- Health & Exercise Science major pursuing a career in occupational therapy. Currently, she is in her senior year at UHM. As a future occupational therapist, Ashley plans to serve the elderly and/ or special needs population by providing
inpatient or outpatient care at a large hospital.

We asked Ashley to share a fun fact about herself and her best college memory.

Fun fact: “I've fractured two bones, broken two bones, and have had one major surgery. This is what inspired me to get into physical/ occupational therapy.”

Best college memory: “There are too many memories for one singular one to be best. I've travelled with my college best friends, have made long lasting friendships in college, and have been able to strengthen my knowledge of the body and how it functions. Hawai'i has made a lot of things possible and that's the best thing and memory I like to live by. “

Thank you so much for sharing, Ashley!
