Hawaiʻi’s landscape creates unique challenges for locating and safely removing unexploded ordnance, from shifting soil after heavy rains to volcanic ground that can interfere with detection equipment.

UH engineering student and Navy veteran Andrew Alling is part of an Army-funded team developing portable tools, drones, and AI methods to better identify buried munitions and support safer cleanup efforts across the islands.

More than a century of military training has left untold numbers of undetonated bombs and other munitions across the Hawaiian Islands.

Congratulations to the 16 high school seniors recognized at the second annual FIRST Robotics College Signing Day, including five students who will be joining the UH Mānoa College of Engineering this fall! 👏

Through FIRST Robotics, these students have gained hands-on experience in engineering, programming, teamwork, and problem-solving before ever stepping into a college classroom. We’re excited to welcome the next generation of innovators.

The sixteen students represent Kapaa High School, James Campbell High School, Kapolei High School, Iolani School, and St. Louis School.

Mahalo to the UH Institute for Astronomy and Maunakea Observatories for hosting us at the annual AstroDay at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo! With roughly 1,000 visitors at the event, it was a great opportunity to connect with the Hawaiʻi Island community, share hands-on STEM activities, and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers.

Team RoSE (Robotic Space Exploration) has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural INCOSE Foundation Excellence in Systems Engineering Award at URC 2026! 🥳

The team is one of just 13 finalists selected from more than 120 University Rover Challenge applicants, recognizing not only the strength of their rover design, but also the systems engineering discipline behind their work.

Congratulations to Team RoSE on this outstanding achievement. We’re excited to see them represent UH Engineering on the international stage. 👏

This month, the Hawaiʻi FIRST Robotics Alumni Chapter Board and Hawaiʻi FIRST Robotics hosted FIRST Signing Day at Saint Louis School’s Mamiya Theatre to celebrate graduating seniors as they announced their college commitments and next steps after high school.

Dean Brennon Morioka provided the welcome remarks and met with incoming UH students following the ceremony.

We look forward to welcoming Nalupio, Laakea, and Elia this fall!

The event was organized by the Hawaiʻi FIRST Robotics Alumni Chapter Board — including Megan Kobayashi, Cristina Felicitas, Sarah Dulay, Rhea Mae Arellano, and Tina Li — in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi FIRST Robotics Chapter.

Congratulations again to all graduating seniors as they begin this exciting new chapter!
