Her work in the LOHE Lab utilizes Jetstream2 to analyze large bioacoustic datasets using machine learning, revealing critical insights into endangered bird populations and informing effective conservation management.

Hawaiʻi Data Science Institute member Mahdi Belcaid led a two week summer program to teach interns from eight Hawaiʻi high schools to develop a digital assistant that aims to reduce paperwork and improve efficiency in medical offices using artificial intelligence. 💻🧑‍💻

This internship was part of Project Hōkūlani, housed in UH Mānoa’s Center on Disability Studies, College of Education.

Hawai‘i Data Science Institute member Sukhwa Hong, an associate professor of data science and business at University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo mentored business students to develop an AI chatbot to assist with academic advising as a part of a recent summer project. 💻🧑‍🎓

Students Jing Feng (marketing major), Ginate Mahuru (management), and Basil Tavake (accounting) worked together to develop the best AI chatbot to assist fellow students with academic advising and career guidance.
The 2024 summer project specifically focused on innovative applications of natural language processing and large language models in sustainability and education

A University of Hawaiʻi project to enhance cyberinfrastructure adoption, capacity and training in the Pacific region earned a 5-year, $6.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation. 💻🏝

Led by principal investigator and Hawaiʻi Data Science member Sean Cleveland, the project will offer services, education and research programs to engage faculty, researchers and students in advanced cyberinfrastructure.

Collaborators include Chaminade University of Honolulu, HI, Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) and University of Guam - UOG

Professor Jason Leigh at the Laboratory for Advanced Visualization & Applications (Lava Lab) introduces Senator Mazie K. Hirono to HAVEN, an interactive state of the art 3D energy planning tool at the Hawaii Data Science Institute at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Lava Lab is the world’s highest resolution hybrid reality visualization system.

In virtual reality, the HAVEN table shows the tradeoffs and interdependencies of resource deployment in various scenarios, to achieve 100% clean energy.

Through a one-week intensive computational modeling training program 💻 supported by the .S. Department of Energy (DOE), University of Hawaiʻi (UH) at Mānoa graduate students across seven disciplines worked to solve complex problems related to Earth and energy.

Hawaiʻi Data Science Institute member and project Principal Investigator Alice Koniges along with UH Mānoa Professor of Mathematics Monique Chyba and computational scientists from two DOE labs hosted the summer program that made use of hands-on problem solving sessions with software run on Koa the UH high performance computing cluster, Amazon Web Services and DOE's Perlmutter supercomputer.

Congratulations to Candace Edwards on your graduation! Candace earned her Master's in Computer Science from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and was a graduate student with the Hawaiʻi Data Science Institute contributing to the data science fellows program and the ‘i EPSCoR Change HI project efforts which focus on climate and data science.

As a computer scientist, Candace's research focuses in graph networks, generative AI application product architectures and vector databases. Thank you Candace for all of your outstanding contributions and wishing you lots of success in all your future endeavors!
