🦷📸 Finishing Midterms and Diving Into Diagnostic Records! ✨

Our Kapiʻolani Community College Dental Assisting students are wrapping up their midterm examinations this week and continuing to build the clinical skills they will use in practice. 📚✅

This week, students are learning about Diagnostic Records, including the role that photographs, radiographs, and diagnostic images play in supporting a complete clinical evaluation. These records help document important features such as tooth angulation, dental crowding, and the presence of unerupted teeth. 🦷🔍

Students are also gaining hands-on experience taking extraoral and intraoral photographs, which capture the color, shape, texture, and characteristics of oral and facial structures. Dental photography can support patient identification, treatment planning, case presentation, case documentation, and patient education. 📷🗣️

As part of their training, students are practicing the standard orthodontic photographic series, including:

📸 Extraoral photographs
• Frontal view with lips relaxed
• Frontal view smiling
• Right profile view with lips relaxed

🦷 Intraoral photographs
• Full frontal view with teeth in occlusion
• Maxillary occlusal view
• Mandibular occlusal view
• Right buccal view
• Left buccal view

This experience teaches students that obtaining quality diagnostic records requires proper positioning, consistency, attention to detail, patient communication, and teamwork. 🤝✨

🦷📸 From the Classroom to Real Patient Experience!

Our Kapiʻolani Community College Dental Assisting students are continuing to strengthen their confidence and clinical skills in dental radiography! 💪✨

This week, students practiced the proper placement of photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plates and digital image sensors in each other’s mouths, moving beyond practice on the DXTR manikin. While DXTR is an essential tool for learning positioning, angulation, and technique, practicing on a classmate gives students a much more realistic understanding of what the patient actually experiences. 🦷📷

By working with one another, students were able to experience firsthand how sensor size, placement, anatomy, comfort, gag reflex, communication, and positioning can affect the radiographic process. They also had the opportunity to give each other feedback and make adjustments to improve both placement and patient comfort. 🤝💬

One of the most valuable parts of this activity is that our students now understand what it feels like to have a PSP plate or digital sensor positioned in the mouth. That experience will help them better communicate with future patients, explain what to expect, recognize discomfort, and make appropriate adjustments whenever possible. 💙

🌺 A special mahalo to the Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) Foundation for helping make it possible for our students to learn and gain hands-on experience with two different digital radiography systems. Exposure to both PSP technology and digital image sensors helps prepare our students for the different systems they may encounter in dental practices throughout the community. 🙌🦷

We are proud to see our students combining technical skill, communication, empathy, and patient-centered care as they continue preparing for Clinical Externship! 👏✨

Learning the technique is important—but understanding the patient experience makes the care even better. 📸💙

🦷✨ Building Confidence, Communication, and Clinical Readiness! ✨🦷

Our Kapiʻolani Community College Dental Assisting students are putting their knowledge into action through an in-class pediatric patient case study focused on professional communication, behavior management, patient education, and preventive oral health. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️💬

Students worked together to determine how they would care for Keanu, a nervous 6-year-old patient attending his first dental visit, while also communicating with and educating his parent about plaque control, early childhood decay, sealants, home care, and the importance of creating positive dental experiences at an early age. 🪥😁🦷

These case studies challenge our students to think beyond the clinical procedure. Dental assistants must know how to communicate with pediatric patients at their level, recognize fear and anxiety, provide reassurance, support parents, and explain oral health recommendations in a professional and understandable way. 💙🤝

With only 5 weeks until Clinical Externship, our students are continuing to strengthen the skills they will need when working with real patients and dental teams in the community. At the same time, they are completing their midterm examinations, demonstrating how much they have learned and how far they have progressed this semester. 📚✅💪

🌺 We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made in just a few short weeks. Their growth in confidence, communication, professionalism, and clinical thinking is becoming more evident each day as they prepare for the next step in their journey. 🦷👏💙

Every classroom discussion, hands-on activity, case study, and assessment is preparing them to become confident, compassionate, and professional dental assistants.

Clinical skills are important—but how we communicate, educate, and build trust with our patients is just as important. 💬❤️

We are proud to celebrate our Fourth Annual Oral Health Integration between the Kapiʻolani CC Dental Assisting and Nursing Programs! 🤝🏽❤️

Our Dental Assisting students put their knowledge and skills into action as oral health educators, working alongside our future nurses and primary care providers to share the importance of oral health, prevention, patient education, and the connection between oral and overall health. 🦷🪥🩺

This integration is about more than sharing knowledge—it is about changing how we think about healthcare. Medical and dental care need to work as one for our patients and our community. The mouth is part of the body, and oral health cannot be separated from overall health. By educating and training future healthcare professionals together, we strengthen communication, collaboration, prevention, and our ability to care for the whole patient. ❤️

Mahalo nui loa to Leilehua High School for inviting the Kapiʻolani CC Dental Assisting Program to participate in their College & Career Night! It was especially meaningful for me to return to my alma mater and share the dental profession with the next generation. 💚💛

We had the opportunity to introduce students and families to careers in Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, and Dentistry, while sharing the different local college and educational pathways available to pursue these professions. 🦷🎓
