⏰9 more DAYS until the abstract submission deadline!! Come join us NOW!
📖The East-West Center invites graduate students, scholars, practitioners, artists, and scientists who have earned a graduate degree within the past three years, to submit abstracts for the 23rd Annual International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC), taking place in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, USA from February 15-17, 2024.
This year's theme is "Elucidating the Periphery: Rethinking Neglected Narratives and Novel Approaches." As we share research relevant to the Asia-Pacific region, this year’s conference shall provide a space where participants venture beyond their own boundaries to interface with neglected narratives from peripheral perspectives as well as novel techniques in a transdisciplinary context. We invite ALL whose work highlights issues, communities, or practices that broadly concern the periphery.
🌈The deadline for abstract submission is September 15, 2023, at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time.
❓For more information and to submit your abstract, visit eastwestcenter.org/studentconference!

💌 We are THREE weeks away from seeing you at the 22nd IGSC! For our public keynote address this year, we feature Dr. Ilan Noy. He is the Chair in the Economics of Disasters and Climate Change - Te Āwhionukurangi, at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. His research and teaching focus on the economic aspects of natural hazards, disasters, and climate change, and other related topics in environmental, development, and international economics. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Economics of Disasters and Climate Change. He previously worked at the University of Hawai’i, and has consulted for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, OECD, UNDRR, the IMF, and ASEAN.

👨‍🏫 Dr. Noy's keynote address is entitled "Building Back Better: A goal, an aspiration, or just a slogan?" Resonding to the conference theme "Recover and Resilience in a Changing World" Dr. Noy will identify the ways we can think about an economic recovery that is indeed better, and what may be some of the policies that can lead us in that direction, and not away from it.

The keynote address, which is part of the opening ceremony, is open to the public. SAVE THE DATE, join us, and spread the word~

📅 Date: February 16, 2023

We are ONE MONTH away from the 22nd International Graduate Students Conference! Check out the "Recovery and Resilience" theme poster for our annual gathering!

🌊This wonderful poster is done by our very own EWC participant Maria Karaan! It is inspired by ahupua'a, the Hawaiian term for traditional Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) subdivision of land. An ahupua'a often extends from the mountains to the sea, often following the boundary of stream drainage. Similar to many Indigenous communitiesʻ socio-ecological systems, the ahupuaʻa system reflects Kanaka Maoliʻs technological advancement and ancestral wisdom, and has been significant for achieving community resilience in the face of climate change and food insecurity, as well as recovering from environmental destruction. The poster is an artistic rendition of the ahupua'a system, with the blue and black colors resembling the water that flows from the mountain (top part) to the shore (bottom part).

🌺With this poster, we hope first-time participants can get to know a little bit more about Hawaiʻi---where this gathering is taking place---to honor the knowledge from this land, and to start thinking about what Recovery and Resilience look like!

Aloha, and see you in a month!
