The ALOHA Cabled Observatory (ACO) is one of but a handful of seafloor observatories worldwide connecting deep-sea science directly to the researchers who are working to understand the complex processes that occur there. Logistically and literally, the ACO is a collection of oceanographic instruments under 5 kilometers of water 100 kilometers north of Oahu, Hawaii, connected to shore by 237 kilometers of cable.

The data collected with instruments at the ACO are managed with computers at the AT&T Station at Makaha (see Data Management), transmitted via TCP/IP to computers at the University of Hawaii (see Networking), and displayed here in real-time.
