Welcome to the official page for the College of Education at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa located in the beautiful Mānoa valley on the island of Oahu. As a land-grant institution, the University of Hawai'i is committed to improving education in Hawai'i and the region, preschool through graduate school. Ours is a complex and robust college providing educational research, policy studi

es, curriculum development, professional development, and educational services as well as teacher and educational leader preparation programs. The College has eight academic departments and two major research units—the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) and the Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG). We are housed within a tier one research university and are honored to be designated RU/VH (Research University; very high research activity) by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Improving Education: Teachers and Leadership
The College of Education has over 1,600 students and approximately 350 faculty providing innovative and stimulating programs for students seeking licensure as teachers and preparation for leadership in education. The College offers 5 undergraduate degrees, 2 post-baccalaureate certificates, 4 graduate certificates, 9 masters degrees, 9 doctoral specializations and awards over 700 degrees annually. We pride ourselves on preparing educators at all levels to contribute to a just, diverse, and democratic society, while developing a sense of purpose and a sense of place reflecting our unique location. We are a nationally accredited teacher preparation program and are consistently ranked among the top 100 graduate schools of education by U.S. A Broad Variety of Programs and Offerings
We have programs in early childhood education, elementary education, middle school education, secondary education, Hawaiian education, special education, physical education, kinesiology, athletic training, rehabilitation counseling, curriculum studies, educational administration, educational psychology, educational technology, educational foundations, and more. We provide multiple alternative routes to teacher licensure and many of our programs are available via distance technology, off campus, or in innovative formats for non-traditional students. A Rich History
Our College has a rich history of serving education in Hawaii and we are dedicated to finding answers to the problems that confront our schools and developing solutions to address those challenges. We focus on finding creative ways to prepare education professionals and developing a stronger and more responsive College of Education in the areas of research and service. Take a moment to review the College's publications and reports for a more in-depth look at our efforts. Serving Hawaiʻi’s Educational Needs Beyond the Classroom

Working in partnership with Hawaiʻi’s Department of Education and private schools, the College of Education provides professional development and licensure opportunities for educators as well as prepares researchers and professionals for fields beyond K-12 education and in non-school settings. Students receive a fresh and innovative learning experience at the College of Education. Classes are hands on, practical, and informative with many options available online. Distance Education and Technology
The College of Education is a leader in distance education within Hawaiʻi and nationally. Because of our unique island geography, many potential educators do not have access to campus-based programs. Because of the College's many programs for non-traditional students, many students can take classes through a variety of online and statewide/hybrid class offerings. With Aloha and Commitment
At the College of Education, we are more than willing to help you on your path to inspiring and leading through education. Our faculty and staff are happy to work one-on-one with students and want to assist you in any way possible. It is an honor for me to serve as Dean of this outstanding College of Education. Last month, The College of Education held its annual Graduate Student Research Symposium. This symposium takes every year and is an opportunity for students to get feedback on their work and meet people from throughout the college. Community Work Days at Ka Papa Lo‘i O Kānewai are open to all UH Mānoa students and community members. It’s a chance to get hands-on with traditional Hawaiian farming practices, connect with the ʻāina, talk story with practitioners, and learn in a way you won’t get in a classroom. Living here comes with the responsibility to care for this place, this is one way to show up and give back. 🌱

What a wholesome ending to our journey through the Secondary Education Licensure Program. I’m so grateful for my cohort members, the faculty, and the mentor teachers who helped us get to where we are today. While we’re sad to see this chapter end, we know we have built a community of educators who will continue to support one another in the next chapter ahead.

Congratulations class of 2026!

NEW ON COE STORIES 🎙️✨

[14] A Dean’s Journey in Kinesiology, Leadership, & Concussion Awareness (ft. Nathan Murata)

Nathan Murata traces his career from playing contact sports (and sustaining early concussions) to leading groundbreaking research on concussion protocols across Hawaii’s public and private schools. He discusses the Hawaii Concussion Awareness and Management Program (HCAMP), state-mandated baseline testing, and surprising local data revealing high concussion rates in sports like girls’ judo. The conversation underscores how data-driven advocacy led to legislative change (Act 262) and safer practices statewide.
