John A. Burns School of Medicine

John A. Burns School of Medicine Official account of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Our students at the John A.

Burns School of Medicine are the best and brightest Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands have to offer. More than 1,500 applicants annually compete for 70 slots in the first-year class. We are among the most culturally and ethnically diverse medical school in the world, and our student body mirrors the diversity of Hawai'i’s population. Our primary mission is to train physicians for Hawai'i and the Pac

ific, and we are proud that approximately 50% of the practicing physicians in Hawai'i are graduates or faculty members of the John A. Burns School of Medicine or affiliated Hawai’i Residency Program. We have a faculty of 200 full-time and more than 1,000 volunteers and a teaching relationship with all major community hospitals throughout the main Hawaiian island of O'ahu. We also perform student training on Hawai'i Island or in the offices or clinics of rural volunteer faculty. Our students learn in an innovative, student-centered, problem-based curriculum, (PBL) that emphasizes critical thinking, medical simulation-based experiences and builds life-long learning skills. Our page is intended to inform our page visitors about school activities, to connect with alumni and to publicize school achievements. Our website is at www.jabsom.hawaii.edu.

One of our faculty members gets to pay her respects to our silent teachers as a member of the band. Chair of Pathology Dr. Karen Thompson has been playing the bagpipes for 10 years. Hear how she got started. She also invites anyone interested (all ages) to come and learn this unique instrument with the Celtic Pipes & Drums of Hawaiʻi.

Last month, a $144 million federal investment was announced to measure, research, and remove microplastics from the human body. But what does that mean for us locally?

At JABSOM, our researchers are already investigating, specifically studying how these tiny particles impact maternal health.

In Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, JABSOM’s Johann Urschitz breaks down exactly how we’re exposed to microplastics daily and the simple lifestyle changes we can make to protect ourselves.
