Today we honor the brilliance, resilience, and legacy of Alice Augusta Ball (1892-1916) 💛

A pioneering chemist and the first woman, Black graduate, and Black woman of the College of Hawaiʻi (now UH Mānoa) to graduate with her Master of Chemistry degree. Alice Ball was the first Black professor at UH and developed the first effective treatment for Hansen’s disease at just 23 years old — a groundbreaking contribution that saved countless lives globally for decades.

Alice Ball Day is a reminder that Black excellence has always been part of Hawaiʻi’s history. Her story challenges us to remember, uplift, and continue the work of those whose contributions were stolen and overlooked for far too long.

We celebrate her innovation.
We celebrate her impact.
We celebrate her legacy.
