The College of Liberal Arts congratulates Darius Jones, one of the winners of The Daniel Binkley prize in World History for 2021-2022. The Daniel Binkley Prize was established in 2009 to honor retired HPU Professor Daniel Binkley, and is awarded annually as a cash prize for(an) outstanding undergraduate research paper(s) in world history. We gratefully acknowledge donations from the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) History Club of Honolulu to support this prize and the service of Emeritus Professor of History, Marc Gilbert, in establishing the competition and organizing it annually.

Darius Jamal Jones who graduated from HPU with Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in Spring 2022, is awarded for “A Toxic Relationship: China and the Environment.”
The People’s Republic of China has the world’s largest population, second largest economy by GDP, and second most powerful military. However, China is also the world’s biggest polluter and currently contributes more greenhouse gases to the global warming crisis more than any other country. This paper explores pollution and climate change in the context of the People’s Republic of China past and current attitude toward the environment and climate change . . . Air, water, and ground pollution is an enormous problem in many areas in China; however, the government has indeed taken steps to promote renewables and clean energy, clean industrial waste from lakes, rivers, and ground water, and decommission coal-fired energy plants across the country. At the same time, programs like China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative – a sprawling international development program aimed at investing in infrastructure in dozens of countries across the world and establishing China as a leader in global affairs – has led to the creation of hundreds of fossil fuel-intensive projects in China and beyond. It is fair to say that the PRC’s relationship with climate change and the environment is a complicated one.

Hawaii Pacific University’s strategic communication students are American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) District 13 winners of the 2022 National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) held on Saturday, Apr. 23 at Chaminade University of Honolulu.

NSAC, sponsored by American Advertising Federation (AAF), is an annual nationwide competition. Each year a corporate sponsor provides a case study of a real-world marketing problem challenging students to research the product and competition, identify potential opportunities and produce an integrated campaign for the client.

As District 13 winners, HPU’s NSAC team will proceed to the virtual semi-final round, which is a 20-minute video presentation and a 10-minute conference call Q&A session with a panel of national judges, held on May 5-6. All first-place district winners will compete for one of eight national finalist spots. The top eight teams will advance to the national competition held in conjunction with ADMERICA, AAF’s national conference, which this year will be held in Nashville, TN.

Join us for the final film of the 2022 French Film Festival
Slalom by Charlène Favier

Thursday April 21st at 6 pm.

This riveting, Cannes-selected drama from debut filmmaker Charlène Favier follows the relationship between a teenage ski prodigy and her predatory instructor, played by frequent Dardenne brothers collaborator Jérémie Renier. In a breakthrough role, Noée Abita plays 15-year-old Lyz, a high school student in the French Alps who has been accepted to an elite ski club known for producing some of the country’s top professional athletes. Taking a chance on his new recruit, ex-champion turned coach Fred decides to mold Lyz into his shining star despite her lack of experience. Under his influence, she will have to endure more than the physical and emotional pressure of the training. Will Lyz’s determination help her escape Fred’s exploitative grip?

In Night of the Kings, directed by by Philippe Lacôte,

A young man is sent to “La Maca,” a prison in the middle of the Ivorian forest ruled by its inmates. As tradition goes with the rising of the red moon, he is designated by the Boss to be the new “Roman” and must tell a story to the other prisoners. Learning what fate awaits him, he begins to narrate the mystical life of the legendary outlaw named “Zama King” and has no choice but to make his story last until dawn

Bamako, 3rd film in HPU's French film festival, will be introduced tonight at 6 p.m. Aside from introducing the economic situation in postcolonial Africa that is the subject of the trial at the core of the movie, the introduction will touch on postcolonial criticism since the movie is structured around the mimicry (mocking) of Western jurisprudence.

The French Film festival continues with 35 Shots of Rum.

35 Shots is Denis’s warmest, most radiant work, honoring a family of two’s extreme closeness while suggesting its potential for suffocation. 35 Shots is firmly rooted in place, several scenes unfolding in an apartment building in a run-down section of Paris’s 18th arrondissement, home to Lionel and Joséphine; Gabrielle, an ex of Lionel’s who still aches for him; and Noé, nursing a crush on Joséphine. Dyads align, shift, break, and regroup among the foursome, jealousy simmering during an unforgettable scene at a café, in which Noé cuts in on a sweetly dancing Lionel and Joséphine as the Commodores’ “Night Shift” plays

The film will be introduced 6 p.m. Thursday March 24 on Zoom.

Dr Nitasha Sharma, a comparative race scholar, will speak at HPU on March 24 at 5:30 p.m. in ATM MPR-3. She is the author of Hawai'i is my Haven: Race and Indigeneity in the Black Pacific (Duke University Press, 2021). Hawaiʻi Is My Haven maps the context and contours of Black life in the Hawaiian Islands.
Dr.Sharma will lead a conversation about topics such as
-Why it is important to study and learn about African American history in Hawai‘i.
-How we understand race in Hawai‘I and how it affects daily life in the Islands
-How Hawai’i differs from the continental US—that is, in what ways should we be careful about implementing continental US (mainland) paradigms to the Islands?
-How being in Hawai’i changes the way people, especially Black people, from elsewhere think and feel about themselves
-How and why we should we address antiBlack racism in Hawai’i.
