Almost exactly fifteen years ago I started Humans of New York with a simple thesis: every type of person can be found in New York City-- and if you could somehow capture this city, you could capture humanity. So I set myself a delusionally large goal: to photograph ten thousand New Yorkers. At the time I was a brand-new photographer and had no idea what I was doing. Half my photos were out of focus. I’d broken my camera and couldn’t afford to fix it, so the lens was literally being held together by duct tape. But any shortcomings were overcome by sheer determination, social media, and the power of a good idea. Humans of New York would eventually evolve into much more than photography, and the work would take me to nearly fifty countries around the world. But I never let go of that core belief: if you could somehow capture New York City, you could capture humanity. So I set out one last time, as a mature artist, to capture this place that has given me so much. ‘Dear New York’ was created over several years, and features hundreds of unseen portraits and stories from all over New York City. I love it dearly, and put so much of my life and energy into its creation that it’s almost like a child to me. In ten days it will be released into the world. If you love New York, love people, or love Humans of New York—you will love this book. And I’d love nothing more than for you to have a copy in your home. You can order here: bit.ly/dearnewyorkbook
