Hawaii Natural Energy Institute - HNEI

Hawaii Natural Energy Institute - HNEI HNEI is an organized research unit of SOEST at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), a research unit of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM), conducts research of state and national importance to develop, test and evaluate novel renewable energy technologies. The Institute leverages its in-house work with public-private partnerships to demonstrate real-world operations and ena

ble integration of emerging technologies into the energy mix. Founded in 1974, HNEI was established in statute in 2007 to address critical State energy needs.

HNEI was selected in a competitive solicitation as an initial partner of U.S. DOE’s Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) to support energy system planning and project identification in island and remote communities. We are seeking applications from energy stakeholders in Hawai‘i and Pacific U.S. Territories who are interested in receiving technical and policy support from our project team over the next 12 to 18 months. More information about this can be found at the link below.

HNEI was selected in a competitive solicitation as an initial partner of U.S. DOE’s Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) to support energy system planning and project identification in island and remote communities. Beginning in December 2020, the three-year ETIPP program’s ...

HNEI has partnered with the Hawaii State Department of Education to create the HIDOE Thermal Comfort Portal (http://hnei.hidoe-thermal-comfort.4dapt.com/) where environmental data collected at Hawaii's public schools is accessible.

The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is taking another step to monitor and adjust classroom temperatures. Beginning this month, the HIDOE Thermal Comfort website will feature data from 37 schools with weather stations and 62 schools with indoor sensors that monitor classroom temperatures...

HNEI faculty member Pat Cross spoke to PBS NewsHour Weekend's Megan Thompson about our efforts involving wave energy at the test site in Kaneohe Bay.

When it comes to renewable energy, Hawaii stands out, with 15 percent of the state's power coming from solar and wind. Now, the state may be pioneering another renewable form of energy: ocean waves. NewsHour Weekend's Megan Thompson visited a naval base in Hawaii, where researchers are testing a new...
